We're all set--staying at the Highland Inn. We're leaving Friday sometime between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. How's that for a window? It depends upon how the work day goes.
Manuel's sounds like the place start on Saturday. We'll be there.
Hey Stan did you ever figure out what you're doing? Maybe you and Beaufro could hook up.
As for other venues, let us all know when you want to go somewhere jjhitsmysoul. Many of us have an opinion of the best venues to see 'em at and we ain't shy about sharing!

Does anyone know for sure when JJ comes on? The Mule site says TBA 4:30 then JJ@ 6:00 then Mule @ 7:45. Be nice to confirm this as it looks like this outside venue has no shade. They don't call it Hotlanta for nothing. I'll look for you as always Clay, but I wonder what disguise you'll have on at this show!

Was hoping to make this show, but with a pregnant wife at home (alone), my eldest back home in Louisiana and my youngest on a 3 week trip to Colombia with her Abuela, I'm thinking I best stay home with the wife. Thanks so much to John and Liz for their kind offer to take me along with them....you guys are the BEST....MUCH LOVE!!!! Hoist ten or twelve cold ones for me.

SW, in my book, you've made the right decision. Family does come first......I could have left the kids behind and taken in a couple of recent shows in TN, but I opted to be spend time with them for different outings. No regrets. They grow so damn fast and before I know it, my house will be void of their laughter. and then we will be free to roam the countryside and catch more JJ and the boys.
How is it that our children grow up so fast and we don't......

I'm not making the Atlanta trip, unfortunately. Many of life's interferences came along, including a trip to the ER for that crazy rash that crept up my arms, to my neck, face, and ears. Steroid shot in my rear end = feeling much better now!
Safe travels to all those descending upon Atlanta!

I have the utmost respect for Adam Scone.
And I must say that Andrew Trube on bass & Anthony Ferrell on Keys is a FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC addition to the Mofro Crew. I'm hoping that they are collaborating on JJ's next record.
Great Set, JJ was rowdy & ready! We got an extended version of Brighter Days.
Brian, Liz, Beau, Clay, Jen, A/C, Trube, Ferrell, and Lil Bow Wow made our trip fucking hillarious!
Lil' Bow Wow, "YOU SUCK AT LIFE!" I'm still laughing about that one!
Anyways...I'm off to get some coffee, but wanted to comment on what a GREAT time I'm having with my good freinds. It's like a family on the road y'all.

Sorry for the delay here folks...we got in late last night and unfortunately I have to keep this brief cause I'm between meetings.
The guys brought it; did 13 songs; I have the setlist but Jen has it in her purse. I'll post tonight.
The guys were in such a great mood--amazing considering they flew from LaGuardia after the Bridgeport CT show and arrived at the hotel in Atl at about 1 a.m. (Sat). I don't know how they do it! They're some touring fools! Hell, they had to be in the lobby at 5:30 a.m. yesterday for a shuttle to Atl airport to fly to Pittsburgh for the show last night!
We got to hang out with some of the guys at various times and I got to tell you they are having a great time. There's a complete comeraderie going on with them and when you see and hear them you can feel it.
Weather was great (hot but breezy), venue is interesting--but good. Great people there in the crowd. Most were there for Mule but our boys were well represented.
Saw folks from the board--notfadeaway, Dougloosa and his boy AdamFSU; couldn't find Swampcracka tho dammit! And I got several people turned onto the site too.
DT--yes, they did Brighter Days. Sorry.
Giggles and briggzz--glad I could do even a pittance of something to make y'all smile. Sorry you couldn't be there.
More to come. Many pics, 2 vids as well.
JohnDude--thanks for not telling them all that I not only lost my car key, but also my cell phone. (He and Liz and Beaufro are the best for hanging with us waiting for AAA for 2 hours yesterday. And to whoever may have found my cell phone: no calls to Nigeria please.)

Yeah man, I agree. You don't expect to find a venue like that that's damn near plum downtown. I have to look up the history of that place. It looked to be easily 80+ years old and appears to be some sort of old mill or something. Has the outdoor park that holds 4,000 people, plus 3 live stages in the old building--one that holds maybe 100, one I didn't see, and the one where HCR played which probly holds 400-500.
I'll get the photos up later today SwampCracka--if you're in one of them we'll all shit. JohnDude was back at the board a few times, especially when he was setting up. We were in the center and a tad left, about 4 or 5 "rows" back. Me, Trophy Wife, Liz, JohnDude, Beaufro, notfadeaway, his buddy Chip whom I will from now on refer to as FishNChip.

SOOO True !
Clay you really made my day with the phone call during Brighter Days. I found a corner to slip away into and listened and frothed at the mouth with envy.
Thanks again! Hopefully one day I will get to rock out with my fellow super fans!

Was going to write a review, but for the sake of time, JJ and the Boys have really caught fire with the 2 new additions, whole show was excellent and having the real bass adds a lot to the bottom end. Band played with a lot of energy and just appears to be very tight unit. Also really enjoyed JJ dueling with Warren during the Mule set on 32-20 blues and then seeing some of the guys at the Hill Country Revue show, glad to have a chance to visit with Clay, AC and Chris (inside) and all the others I met by the soundboard. Lets do it again!

M&J your question is not unusual. I've had MANY people (including members of other bands) ask me about Daryl. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Daryl is unique amongst most live musicians. I don't think the question is invasive or anything because people do wonder.
I wondered exactly the same thing when we first started following the band, but after talking with people in the know--band members, friends, others who know him--I have a little better understanding of what makes Daryl tick. I'm not saying that I know all about Daryl (or any of the guys for that matter) or that I have some special insight, because I don't.
The quick answer to your question is that Daryl is having the time of his life up there. He just doesn't show it. First off, Daryl is very shy, introverted may be a better word. Painfully shy might be a better term. In 30+ shows, I've seen Daryl look into the audience maybe ten times. If you get a chance to talk to Daryl, he's so shy that he has a hard time looking at you when he's talking. As he gets to know someone more he begins to loosen up but just a little. At other times, particularly on the bus I'm told, he can talk your ear off at times and he's very funny. Of course we just get to see him on stage. And he is always very...let's say emotion-neutral up there.
Sunshine hit the nail on the head--it is his stage persona and near always has been. (I've been told that if you go back 15 years or so (pre-Mofro) he actually did stand, and did have a more active persona on stage.) But once you become accustomed to it you realize that it is one of the key components that makes Mofro Mofro.
Now, to get deeper into the subject, I know for a fact that he loves every second on stage. Indeed it is difficult for us to realize that because of his demeanor. But a lot of that comes from how he is so into the music. Daryl is incredibly focused. He's hearing every note from every other player and processing it in nanoseconds to determine his next move. Daryl doesn't care to be a "lead guitarist" as much as he cares that his contribution fits perfectly into the mix. Daryl is a very conservative player and feels his part is to enhance the songs, not to lead them.
I've also been told that he has somewhat trained himself to be that focused. AC told me that it takes a tremendous amount of concentration and training to perform like Daryl does. He told us one time that at a show several months ago at a small club where the stage is damn near ground level, there was a woman standing about 6" from Daryl's nose absolutely screaming 'DAAARRRYYYYYL....DAAAARRRRYYYYLLLLL...DAAARRRYYYYYYLLLL!" and did it many times. He said Daryl never even looked up once, just kept playing. AC then told us "I'd have had to look up at some point and say 'WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTT"
I hope that I've given you some insight M&J, and others who wonder the same but don't want to ask. I further hope that what I've shared is an accurate portrayal of Daryl. I hope even further still that I have not crossed any lines. Sometimes I feel like a walk a tightrope in providing info on the band that we all want to know while not delving too far into the personal lives of the guys. Mr. Jimbo, if I have done so or been inaccurate, you know how to reach me.

I was at the two Smith's Ole Bar shows many years ago and was at the front of the stage literally about 2 feet from Daryl. I yelled something like "Wooooo Daryl" and he never looked up or acknowledged anyone being there. That's what's so dang cool about Daryl. His stage presence has become part of the Mofro mystique.
I would love to make a few comments about the show:
1. I missed hearing/seeing J.J. at the keyboard. I know the setlist made it more of a upbeat/guitar/harmonica event, but J.J. on the keys is a good thing.
2. The Greyhounds - nice addition to Mofro, but not one that was really that noticable. Don't get me wrong though - I've seen Anthony and Andrew play many times and they can jam hard, but it seemed more like they were accompaniment vs. an integral part of Mofro. I would have love to have seen them step out more. In fact I think way back in the day, I saw Greyhounds open for Mofro and remember Anthony going to town big time on "Ho Cake".
3. Songs that would have knocked the roof off - Jookhouse, WYLF, and Junior.

Sunshine....I'm fairly sure I have a photo or two of Daryl smiling.....I'll have to dig those up while I'm looking for the DVD of the '04 show.

I agree for the most part with your comments SwampCracka.
As for the keyboards, we'll see them from time to time but I wouldn't count on seeing them in the mix too often. JJ told me that he's enjoying cutting loose on stage and being able to move around and stuff. His stage presence isn't the same as it used to be and the keyboard issue is part of that. I will share more of what JJ told me about the keyboards in a future post.
I've seen Trube and Ferrell break out more in shows this year. It seemed like the plan was to keep songs tight to squeeze more in. There was little time to jam and even at that we only got 13 songs. You're right they did not break loose, but that's not at all to say they were not up to par.
Yeah, a Jookhouse and a Junior would've been a great addition. The place was jam up with Mule fans. At one point during the Mofro show I took a walk toward the back of the venue. Shit. Most people weren't even paying attention to the stage. I can dig that because when I go to something like that I often don't pay attention to other bands. Would a more lively setlist have changed that? I dunno but I do know for a fact that while there were some Mule fans that were impressed, there were those that weren't. Hurts to say it, but hey, if we can say it, and armchair quarterback sometimes, then who can?
While you can't tell it in the pic above, Mofro is on stage. These folks don't look too into it. ---------- MofroFan1

Ah ha! Now I know what you cats look like. I actually thought, as is not always the case, that ALL three bands were pretty good. I had never heard Outformation, and it's been a good number of years since I had heard Govn' Mule, and of course Mofro was awesome.
swkelley - I don't know, but I'm sure we've shared a few shows here and there. I would say that in the band, I knew George the best - he and my friend Mardi are friends. I grew up in Jacksonville, around the corner from where JJ said he and Daryl used to work. There hasn't been a show in Atlanta by Mofro I've missed, as I discovered them in Birmingham around 2002. I remembered hearing this band from Jacksonville @ Zydeco in Birmingham and standing perfectly still, listening to every song and saying "I really like this". It would be the only time I stood still during a Mofro show, but you get the idea.
Clay - I looked through the photos, and I don't see me there. I tried to sport my camo JSO hat, but I just couldn't do it. Looked all wrong and forced on my head. I went with the Southern Thread T and my Crimson Tide hat instead.
