Welllll...it's not THAT kind of date. It's a fishing date! Here's the quick version: The Snook Foundation is holding their "Friends of Inshore Fishing Banquet and Charity Auction" in Punta Gorda, FL. They have several items up for bid on an online auction. ONE OF THEM IS A DAY OF FISHING (FOR 2) WITH JJ. (You don't have to go to the banquet. You can bid online.)

Here are some links with more:

Snook Foundation Florida Oktoberfest Silent Auction October 24, 2009

Online auction bidding page

There is a fishing tournament that weekend, for anyone interested. There's a link to tourney info on the website. The auction winners will be announced at the Banquet on the 24th. Anyone is invited to attend; it's $30 per person. Here's the scoop on the Banquet. (NOPE JJ will not be there. NO you do not need to be present to win.)

Here's the long version. For those new to the board, the Snook Foundation held a fundraiser in June, the Surfin Snook Jam, that featured JJ doing a fabulous acoustic set. JJ donated his time for the cause. The Snook Foundation is comprised of people who volunteer their time to helping protect the coastal waters of Florida. They lobby the state for environmental causes and put tremendous time and efforts into preserving our waterways. (They also like to fish. Oh. And party. They also like to party.)

Times are tough and they need money like anyone. It's an all volunteer group and they depend upon the public to keep them going. They've come up with a great idea to hold an online auction. Some cool stuff including a trip to Costa Rica, and a day of fishing with JJ. The date will depend upon his touring schedule, but it will be within a year and can basically be the location of your choosing.

Just more proof the JJ's the real deal. He doesn't just talk the talk he walks the walk.

(Does he realize somebody like Giggles could win this thing. What was he thinking!?)

Fire away with any questions. I have no answers. But somebody from the Snook Foundation will check in and answer anything.

BTW, the starting bid is $1,200. Hurry!! Final bids are due Oct 22.

I know, I know, but I would have seller's remorse...

I did send an email to a very good friend (who lives over in Clearwater) of mine that is a very avid Snookerman and who loves to help out what he believes in, and we will see, I did let him know that he can bring a friend along too! The Snook is his fish of choice awl day long.

Giggles, did you mean to say life jacket or straight jacket, hahhaa, sorry I couldn't resist!!
:o)

I LOVE to fish! although since moving to the mountains, I don't get much deep sea fishin in. I have caught a baby hammerhead shark, and a 3 1/2 foot black tip shark - I was awl by myself up n the boat, the hubby and buddy were scuba diving with spearguns lurking for fishies and I hooked that shark and reeled it in and even pulled the hook out by myself! I was very proud and when the boys came up they were impressed and we grilled it to perfection and it tasted just like lobster!!!!!!!

Seconds, Giggles, I actually can envision you wearing floogles. It's NOT pretty, but I can envision it.

And then there's that whole whiter than white thing. Besides flailing your arms around (which you call dancing) like a white girl on Nyquil, you have the whitest skin of pertinear anybody I've ever seen. This girl is WHITE y'all. She couldn't hide in a pitch black room. She's so white they can see her glow from the space shuttle. She's so white that's she's actually been mistaken for a paranormal being. She's so white she actually has a Sherwin-Williams paint named after her--"Giggles R White"

A day on a boat in Florida and that poor girl would be ready for some drawn butter and lemon.

Come think of it, I think I should sit this auction out. I wouldn't want JJ & Brett's retinas to be heinously burned by the glare of my skin in the sunlight!
Good luck to all and happy bidding! :p

This is really something. Very cool of JJ to help the Snook Foundation with this and we all know as to how cool it would be to get to experience such a thing, whether an avid fisherman(woman) or not.

I love that they used the lyrics to name the auction. The only thing I can't get over is the thought of spending the day chatting, fishing, kicking it with Brett and JJ, and to top it all off, knowing that if I had that chance, there is no way I would pick any other place to do it at than Lochloosa.

I know JJ has a favorite spot he likes to fish, somewhere near Amelia Island if I remember right (I'm sure someone on here knows or could confirm), but I doubt how well, whether I caught anything, or whether the fishing at Lochloosa is very good, would play into any part of my enjoyment of such a thing.

Also, I have a feeling if I was on that boat for something like this, anyone around would most likely hear the sound of harmonicas, cause I would definitely bring them, can't go to Lochloosa without them, kind of a bad omen if you ask me. That and I wonder how long JJ could hold out before finally getting annoyed at my all the questions I'm sure I would ask to the point that he throws me overboard.

Ah hell, what am I thinking, even if he threw me overboard, that's still more than worth it!

Hey Folks!
Gotta say, it's great having an excuse to be in contact with Clay and the rest of y'all.
I understand that the fishing is not the real draw here, but just want to add that I will fully outfit this trip. As soon as we have a winner (and guest), I'll coordinate some dates with them and JJ. Regardless of location - fresh water lakes, salt water, or wherever, I'll bring whatever we need. Fishing tackle, breakfast and lunch, etc.
Personally, I can't wait!

If so shoot me an email amberleegordon@gmail.com or call my cell 319-230-2526. I won't be able to answer when I'm at work (which is all the time), but I can call back on break.

Amber,
Now yer talking! To be honest, I would approach this one bid at a time. I might be wrong, but I suspect that the leading bid come midnight Thursday will hold through the banquet this weekend. Like I said, I might be wrong, but that is my strong gut feeling.

Clay,
the only other thing I have to add is that there will be a "take home goodie bag" for the winner - fishing tackle, and some other neat things.

I can tell you that JJ is very excited about this. I was excited from the get go, but after talking directly with JJ, I'm downright giddy. It's one of those things that is just plain ole' "right." It will be a great day, period.

Anyone that has pre-bid anxiety, email me directly (brett@snookfoundation.org) and leave a phone number, I'll call you back that evening.

I found out the rules prevent floogles. So that leaves you out giggles. (Maybe we should call you fliggles. Or googles.)

Meanwhile, it's time for those who have not a dreadful fear of water and/or are financially faint of heart to belly up. Midnight tomorrow night--Thurs 10/22--is the deadline for final bids. Do it for the cause. Do it for Florida. At least that's what you can tell anyone that looks at you and says "you paid how much to do what with who??" Do it cause you wanna treat yourself to probly one of the most fun fucking experiences of your life.

Git ur munny out. Giggles, better make it a kidney, a lung, and throw in your gall bladder for good measure. There is a bid for $3,500(!)

Came in late yesterday afternoon I think. Brettox wanted to tell y'all himself but walked right into a long meeting this morning. I just got a text from him asking me to post it. He is super excited and said that the money is going to help the foundation in so many ways so they can achieve their goals. Giddy actually, he's giddy.

Soooooooo...do I hear $3,501???

Quick question for Brett:
Just to clarify - although the online auction bids get cut off at midnight tonight, from your previous post it sounds like there will be bidding opportunities at the banquet on Saturday? And for whoever has the winning bid as of the online cut-off, will they have an opportunity to counter-bid (perhaps via phone?) on Saturday if they are not in attendance?

Thanks!

Good question there from the trophy wife. And god knows I hope she ain't asking on our sake. If so, honey, when we get home tonight we have to talk. Do you have a trust fund or somthing that I don't know about? Selling Oxy on the street? Or something else??

Sunny. I don't have that info. I imagine Brett does. Jen, does it say when you go to the auction page (as in, is it public info?)

Well, it WOULD be $3250 IF the current bid was at $3000. But it's at $3500, so that would make the next level up $3750.

You get no vig, and I'm gonna start charging YOU!

LOL...I was wondering if anybody was wondering. Actually I think you'd either have had to had a Jewish boss (which I did years ago) or be Jewish, or have watched the Soprano's (which TW and I did, or be Italian.)

Vigorish, or simply the vig, is the amount charged by a bookie. It's a Yiddish term. This is the most literal translation. It's also used sometimes in poker and craps. Mob bosses use it as a term meaning their take. A mob boss may say to one of his captains (in my best south Jersey accent)--"I hear you knocked off a container fulla big screen TVs down at the port and sold 'em all to a guy in Philly. Where's my fucking vig you piece of shit?!"

My old boss was hilarious. He was a great guy and taught me more Yiddish phrases than I can remember (hell it was over 25 years ago!) He had a Yiddish phrase for everything. He loved teaching people Yiddish phrases, especially ones like that. He used to use "the vig" for when suppliers tried to charge him interest when he was late making payment (he'd yell at 'em "what the hell? I spend all this money with you and now you're gonna charge me vig???" Then he told 'em to stick it. And he always won. He was fun to watch, learn from too. And that's how I learned "vig.")

Hooo-kay.
The online bidding does stop at midnight tonight.
The banquet attendees will have the opportunity to out bid the prize.
We thought about ways to open it back up to the online crew during the dinner, but it was just too complicated to make sure nobody got slighted at the last minute so this is what it is.
That being said, I stand by my earlier post that I believe the online bid will probably stand. The only way I see it getting bumped is if there are folks there that are fanatics about Florida's conservation, and they have access to a lot of alcohol.
Oh... waitaminit. I might have to rethink this.

On a different note, I heard a rumor that there is a blues fest of some kind in Punta this weekend. Anyone heard about that?

Ok, now this may start some trouble, but what the hell ? If I was to split the bid with someone, and let's say we won, does that mean I am able to or have to bring a guest, or is my bid partner now my guest ? How much shit would this stir up at home? Or, do the winning bidders still bring their own guests? Now, if that wasn't ballsie enough, and I would have to be really, and I mean really high to try this, but how much could I get for the last three remaining autograped dolls (one of which I gave to a fan, who works for the Woodland Park Zoo, and helped us with getting food to the band, seating, and is a great gal)plus......sell off the autographed Epiphone SG Special, electric guitar.....signed by JJ, how much could I raise for the chance to fish with him?
Like I said.......I'd have to be really, really high !
