Don't even have to put the full name or Asheville. If you live east of the Mississippi you probly know about the Orange Peel. We're seriously considering making this show. One of our favorite clubs in one of our favorite cities.

I am really considering making this trip. Asheville is only a 6 hour haul from Nashville. I just checked out The Peel's website. What an awesome venue! You know you wanna make the trip Clay.

Yeah I sho do. It's near double that far for us. We're looking hard at it.
As for the venue, yeah it's awesome. Great sight lines; wide instead of long; big bar with plenty of servers; great acoustics and lighting; in/out privelges; what more you want? Actually I'd like them to serve liquor instead of just beer and wine. "Liquor she said! So liquor I did!!"

This is just looking more and more tempting. We don't get Magic Hat #9 down here and the trophy wife loves it so much last time we were in Asheville we brung home 5 cases (and I don't drink beer). Magic Hat and AWESOME pizza at Barley's and walk to the Peel for JJ Grey & Mofro. I swear it don't get no better'n that.
TN_C, we did the Biltmore thing last year, it's great. I've been a few times ever since I was a kid. Try to do one of the behind-the-scenes tours if you can, they're very cool. ---------- MofroFan1

Clay if it helps, here is a link to cheap airline tickets:
http://www.allegiantair.com/aaRes/aaBooking5_review.php
You get to fly out of St. Pete/Clearwater and into Greensville/Spartanburg (small airport) and it is about an hour drive to Asheville. If you wait a bit to purchase the tickets, the departing price may drop some. Gregg and I are coming into Dunedin this weekend, using the same airports and our round trip price was (including taxes, etc) $68 each, couldn't pass that up. ---------- "Lord feel that vibe, Lord feel that vibe....."

Hey gigs...hold off there. I know Asheville quite well. I know of a couple good deals nearby; stayed in one in Oct. Plus I'm gonna contact the Peel and see if they have a rate. Just gimmee a little time.
Late March is WAAAAAY off season for Asheville. Rooms will be cheap and plentiful. Trust me--which I know is difficult since, after all, you've seen my text dance in person. But do it anyway.
We're leaning way hard to going. Sunshine, thanks, flying is something to consider too. But I'll have to get my arms in shape if I'm to handle all that flapping.

Ive gone to several shows by myself, not mofro shows.. i saw TooL 3 times by my lonesome and although i had a great time, it was something i wish i could have experienced with somebody else. I just have a good job where i make good money and im stuck out here in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico for 2 weeks and when i get home i BALL OUT! I like to go places and do shit and my other friends go to school/ work normal jobs and its really hard to convince them to do shit with me. More than likely ima go regardless cuz i dont live this life but once and its REAL short, so if i wana do something ima do it. Yall keep me updated on who all is going cuz id really like to meet some of yall up there. bout to go to bed, 5am comes quick and a long ass days work will sneak up on me fast.

Sounds like an interesting lifestyle you lead Petty! Pretty cool. I imagine you're ready to bust loose when you come ashore.
We'll run up a roll call list shortly to see who all's going from the board. We'll be well represented and we WILL be hooking up before the show.
As for hotels, I'm pretty familiar with Asheville...been many times. March is off-off season so not only will finding a room be easy, but also there should be some good rates. Hang loose a little longer; I'm gonna take a count of how many rooms we'll all be needing and will see if I can get something nearby that'll give us a group rate.
(The closest one is the Days Inn downtown. I stayed there before. I never will again. The word nasty doesn't even cover it.)
And don't mind FireFly. They don't come any more uber than her. She WOULD do any of those things to see Mofro if the mood struck her. How many times did you see them in 2008 FF? Seriously, 25, 30 times?? ---------- MofroFan1

Hey petty...I could write a mini-novella here on Asheville (but I won't.) As for the venue...awesome. Great site lines from everywhere--no columns to get in the way; the building is wide instead of deep--no cave like feeling so even if you're in the back you're closer than most venues are in the middle; great acoustics and lighting; real big bar and the bartenders double time it (only beer and wine though); in and out privelges.
Asheville sits in a mountain valley. The Blue Ridge Mountains surround it. It may be a bit chilly, but there are excellent hiking trails. The Blue Ridge Parkway. Whitewater rafting and kayaking. Rock climbing. It is a gorgeous area.
The city is mid-sized and a meld of old and new. People too. Every Friday night in the square in town there's a drum circle. People of all ages, backgrounds. But mostly hippies young and old.
The area is a mix of conservative Appalachian locals; retirees (mostly from Florida), progressive/liberals from all over who have found their way to the area and have made it a haven, old hippies from the 60s, new hippies from the 00s, and college students--there are 10-15 small colleges within a 50 mile radius.
The crowd at the Peel will most likely be about 60% college students, 30% 20s and 30s, and the rest old fucks like me.
There are a number of micro breweries in Asheville that feature some excellent local beers. And the restaurants in town, well, if you can name the cuisine chances are you can find it. (Pretty amazing for a city as small as it is.)
Since a lot of the retirees in the area got money, there's also that side of things with nice shops and shit like that.
That's a quickie on the area. Whaddyou guys like to do??

mofrofans: thanks man. Ive been all up in the Smoky Mountains area, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Cherokee, and many other towns around there i cant remember and i love that area, so geographically thats right up my alley.
The venue sounds really cool, and the people sound really chill so thats all cool as well.
Love rare and local beer, i love beer to begin with and i mostly stick to imported/ microbrewed stuff so the breweries will see me for sure.
Love hippies.
If i come with the group of people im trying to get to go, they prolly wont do too much shopping cuz as i said they are broke college cats, so the shops dont really matter. I really like what you said about the place and if it was up to me id stay a few days and have me a lil vacation, but that prolly wont happen this go round.
Thanks for the info tho and i will definitely pass it on, and prolly add a lil more to it to make it even juicier.

bpetty - go to Barley's. its a pizza joint with a slew of brews. its almost across the venue. maybe a block at most. many are local. their pizza ain't too shabby either. Clay left off the Biltmore Estate. you'll pass the entrance on your way into Asheville. there is also a McDonald's there that looks like a log cabin. it was one of Discovery Channel's 10 Most Unique McDonald's a couple years ago.
also most of the kids in the area are referred to as "Trust Fundians". dunno the truth to it, but very well could be.

i havn't nearly listened to all of em, but so far my fav is the only one i saw in person 1-28-09 NOLA House of Blues. Me attending it had something to do with liking it the most, but Big Sam, Mark Mullins sitting in on some tracks, incredibly high energy, i love that setlist, and the guys were spot on that night. Ashley did a great job taping a stellar show. 2-24-08 is good also.
Plus out here i dont have to pay for the internet service or bandwidth, so i can just set a show to DL, go work for a few hours and when i get back, its thru, then i dl another or 3.
