Thank you. I was surprise when I found this website. Glad to know there are people who are passionate about Mofro like me. Question for anyone... does anyone live in Jacksonville area? I'm seriously thinging about spending new Years there and catching the shows. Not sure where the venue is and if there are any decent cheap motels around there.
Hey Muse. Glad you did find us. Still lots of people surprised. How did you come across the site?
I don't live in Jax, I live in Tampa. But I know my way around Jax and this will be our 4th year going to the NY's shows so I've scoped out the hotels and motels pretty thoroughly. I'm going to post more details on the "NYE's Roll Call" thread but I'll give you a "quick" answer here (quick for me cuz I'm a longwinded sumbitch.)
The Freebird is in Jax Beach, about 1/2 hr from downtown Jax. Like all beach towns in Florida it's on a barrier island...there are 3 (or is it 2?) bridges that span the Intracoastal to take you there. Thus ther terms "beachside" and "mainland." Jax Bch, btw, is a sleepy little town, especially in winter. Don't expect much out of it. Espcially if it's cold. And yes it can get pretty damn cold there.
There ain't nuthin cheap on the beachside. NYE's garners about a 30-40%; keep that in mind if ur just coming down for one or 2 shows. We're staying at the Best Western across the street and the rate is $200 on NYE and $140 the other 2 nites.
The cheapest thing you'll find on the beachside is probly gonna be maybe 20% less than above, the Days Inn in particular. It's about a 10 block walk. We've stayed there with decent results; some of the reviews online would lead one to believe that the place should be condemned.
The Marriot and a couple others are another block or so but I don't think they're much cheaper than the BW and it's a one block walk (about 5 minutes if you're crawling.)
Cheap stuff, without going to the mainland, is up in Mayport which is about a 10 min drive. Way too far to walk. There's a Comfort Inn and a couple others that are priced more reasonable.
Mainland, you can find stuff cheapest of all. If you want something out by the Interstate you can get a room for $45-$50. It's 30 mins tops to Jax Bch. I've done it, considering I only had 2 drinks all night long I still had a great time (and didn't care if I got pulled over cause I knew I was under .08)
Thanks mofrofans1. That kind of blows that jax beach doesn't really have any cheap hotels... ( unlike here in Tampa Bay. I am a St. Pete girl) I found this website through the official website. I know I'll be at the Orlando show for sure and of course the TB Blues fest, since it is in my own backyard.
Cool. We live in NW Hillsborough. The ones that are 10 or 12 blocks away are cheap-er and aren't too bad of a walk as long as it ain't cold and windy. The drive is like 2 or 3 mins and the speed limit is like 15 mph in thru there.
If you don't mind be a 10 min drive or so away then Mayport's the way to go (I think.) While you're there you can take the Mayport ferry across the St. Johns. One of only 2 or 3 ferries left running in Florida. Somebody else jump in...
Yep. Takes 3 to 3 1/2 hours. Depending on where you live and which site you use (Mapquest, google, bing, etc.) you either take I4 to I95 or take I75 to Ocala and then take US301 to I10. The latter route takes you right thru Lochloosa and just before you get on 10 you're within 10 minutes or so of several places mentioned in JJ's songs, and near where he lives. I take the 301 route...I've found it to be nearly the same length of time and it's a much more pleasant drive.

It’s 2025 and my expenses to keep this site up are just over $800/yr. If you want to help offset my expenses to keep this site up please consider pitching in a buck or 2. Much obliged!
