There's a lot of songs that haven't been on the setlist lately. I went back over 3 mos worth of setlists and couldn't find any of the songs below. (As swkelly pointed out, Andrew and Anthony haven't been with the band all that long and it ain't like there's a lot of time for practice.)
This ain't meant to be digging at JJ or the band or nuthin; just something different and it'll be fun to see if we're all over the place or if there are any song(s) that win hands down.
make a girl choose, you know we ain't good at that..men! ---------- "It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation." - Herman Melville

BUT Nare Sugar sure is a rocking good time at a show...
---------- "Now if you happened to come down here tonight...and you don't wanna hear the person next to you sang, and you don't want'em to dance, cause you might spill your drink, you came to the wrong show in the wrong venue."
Yo Stan...write it in the "Other" space on the poll; that way we'll have it in the o-fficial results. (Less ye already voted for something else and then it won't let you vote again.)
Morena you are so correct!! :o) ---------- "If you've never seen us before, don't be bashful - sing along from start to finish........and dance & feel good.....there's enough shit in the world, let it all out...........Brighter Daaaaays...."
there is no legitimate reason, besides it not being my band, why the following songs are not in setlist more often for enjoyment by all. a few song that they really kick ass on
Feelin Good (Gospel) Voices Inside (Everything is Everything) Santa Claus Free Sad Days, Lonely Nights 10000 Islands (stripped down JJ,Daryl,Andrew, acoustics, slides, lapsteels)
and while Andrew and Anthony are in the fold still they should for sure play

Forgot about Everything is Everything...UHollis you sent me a set of cd's from 3 nights at the Bamboo room afew years back from the old listserve. Me and my wife attended the last show but the first show they did Everythang is Everythang and it was our first time hearing it and it was great. Would love to hear that live!!
What about adding Gotta Know on there as well. One of the old school ones like Dew Drops and She Don't Know that I am hoping makes the next album.
A few others:
Nare Sugar with the Jamaican Rap? Caught the Devil in Eudora Arkansas Battle is Over (The War Goes On) Hard Times Home Sweet Home with Blackwater Homework On My Mind Mannish Boy

Mofro for life in Arizona The Rhythm Room is exactly that when the boys are kicking it here. "Walking on Moonlight in the Day."
In LA, there were a few girls talking to JJ after the show right before I got to talk to him and they were naming off all sorts of songs to him asking him to play them again live. He responded to alot of them saying that they weren't playing a large majority of them because one, with the new guys added, the Greyhounds, they had not worked on those songs together, and two, that there were some he chooses not to play because he felt he hadn't worked the song into the way he wants it for a live version. I don't remember alot of the songs that they were talking about, but was trying my best not to act like I was eaves-dropping. I know Nare Sugar was one that they had not worked on yet with the other guys.

i doubt they rehearse much on the bus, and that doesnt give them much time to practice.
i recall listening to an interview once where Trey said that in the early years, i think up until about 96, phish would practice on the bus, and then backstage until the moment the show started.
When I got to talk to him, I didn't ask him about any songs that they didn't play. Sure didn't want to bother him about that right after he put Brighter Days on the setlists for me for both of the SoCal shows. I thanked him many times over more than anything. Definitely goes to show as to the type of person JJ and the guys in the band are when he is true to his word after I asked him to play it the next time I was at a show back in June. Like alot of people, it being my favorite, it was a long wait to hear it live and every show I went to prior it kept eluding me. It was over 4 years and over 10 shows, but he told me in June to let him know when I would be at the next show and he would put it on there. He knew I was going to be at atleast one of the SoCal shows, if not both and after the LA show, remembered who I was, thanked me for the harp I gave him in June, said he put BDays on the setlist for both to make sure I got to hear it, and was his genuine self once again.

Not only that, but I couldn't say enough about Art and plan on thanking him many times over when I see them again. That guys is first of all is absolutely hilarious, but truely a very, very, very nice and considerate guy. He has always been so nice to my girlfriend and I at every show, makes it a point to go out of his way to make us laugh, enjoy the show and everything else it offers afterwards. That being said, he's ridiculous on the sax, but that's a whole other story.

yeah, in eugene two years ago, after the show, and the bar scene had died, my wife and I, a few friends, and Art walked up to the burrito shop and ate and chatted till about 4 am. He's good peeps. Hell, they all are.
I don't mind so much keeping the rarities, well, rare, but WE NEED SOME NARE SUGAR! I mean thats just essential MOFRO!
That said I could go for a good Gotta Know, I hear ya there DT. Or a Devil. Or a Gospel. Or a Voices Inside. You know, not askin for much here ;) Oh wait, or a FROG GIGGIN! There, thats it. I swear.
Ok, Ok, twist my arm. I would FREEAK out to hear that American Trilogy they dropped at the Jewish Mother, but I guess that was just a one time flash in the pan...
i recall once at the sidebar in Gainesville, iwant to say march 03, we met up with our good friends Red and Okra, we walked down to the show, and it was already beyond packed, there was load in ramp along the left side of the room where the bands gear was. one chap was already up the ramp a bit, and had a single sennheiser 421 slung over a sprinkler line to record, not another single taper.
we tucked in right behind him, could barely see the stage, and it was hot ass donkey balls in the joint.
they came out onstage, said a few things to one another, and then launched into Nare Sugar. JJ barely got "is this a big party" out of his mouth before the whole place erupted.
encore of Florida and JJ solo Seminole Wind.
I still think the raunchiest and funkiest mofro crowd i have ever seen. the bathroom was up front, and it took me over two song to get there and back, and what does that place hold, like 200 peeps.
Whew, my heart is beating a bit fast just thinkin of it.
Nare Sugar opener in the hotbox.
went to jenny springs the next day.

Damn, UHollis, you most certainly painted a wonderful picture in my little head and I can see why your heart was a pounding thinking about that experience you had some 6 years ago.....I am kinda jealous...no envious of you guys that were able to see the boys play back when. Wish I knew now what I didn't know then.
This month [I just realized), is my 3 year Mofroversary!! JJ Grey & Mofro,(it was just Mofro then) found me via some peeps I had known for over 20 years. They put in one of their cds and played "Blackwater" out by the far pit; back when they were visiting my holler in September 2006. Mofro was to play the Orange Peel the very next month and it was Gregg and my first MoFro show! Like Clay had stated to me once, that night is forever etched in my mind. Never have I ever walked away EVER from a concert and experiened what I did that night, the emotions, {Lord I felt that vibe), and highs along with it, it was a spiritual moment if you will.
Like JJ says "It feels so good deep down inside, you know what I'm talkin about!"
I just need to count my blessings that I have been able to experience them as long as I have and have come so far with my knowledge and admiration for them all.
And thank you Clay for this webstie and it has certainly fanned my Mofro flames - and I have met, and some yet to meet, some folks as cool and genuine as JJ himself. Sorry for the ramble. but that is why I love this board.
and yes, Nare Sugar would be indeed a treat I agree whole heartedly!!!

JJ Grey is absolutely one of the most soulful, ear-catching singers of his generation, and his songwriting and guitar work are dead solid, too. However, this set, like many others I've caught in recent years, was pretty much more of the same. Mofro has been stalled in largely the same comfortable place for years, where decent, if not especially noteworthy, backing players execute Grey's Southern tinged rock & soul pretty well. Nothing here is bad and most present clearly enjoyed this set, but one longs for Grey to be surrounded by musicians with as much ambition and natural talent as him. It'd be nice to see Grey pushed out of his comfort zone, where he might discover the x-factor that could move Mofro from being a nice but sadly predictable band into the richer territory hinted at within the existing framework.
That is quite the review there UHollis, thanks for posting it. I'm quite confused with it as well. Either Art, Dennis, AC, and the Greyhounds were off stage when the reviewer had the chance to see them, or he is just talking about Daryl as Mofro. I can see a comment about Daryl not showing as much ambition, but the rest of the guys are about as lively and full of natural talent as a band can get. Even at the El Rey show, Daryl was starting to toe tap and show quite a bit of movement for once. Other than that, the only other thing that I think could have given reason to such a comment is that is was a short set. I can't imagine a review like that after the full sets at SD or LA. Not only that, but I bet the guys were dead tired for this show. I know they didn't get onto the bus in LA until well after 2 am, had the drive to SF, which is not a short trip, and they were flat out dead tired after that show as well. Talking to JJ I could just tell he was worn out and ready for the current week or two off to recharge. I'm figuring they got to San Fran for the show well after noon and then went through all the craziness of such a huge event, set up and played a short set, hung out for a bit and headed home as soon as possible. Even so, can't see this comment having much validity to it, kinda hard to get the feeling of a full set vibe in a 45 minute set. They could have played a 45 minute Junior and 20 minutes of it would have been Art and Dennis dueling on the horns, would he have said that was predictable and/or lacked talent and ambition? ---------- Delerious Tyme

Also, I did read a blog somewhere of someone who did a review of the Outside Lands Festival as well, a review of the entire weekend. They had Mofro listed a a definite must see and the surprise of the weekend. Then later listed them with 3 or 4 others as the highlights of the festival. If I come across it again, I will post the link.

Damn Hollis...a greazy Mofro show AND Jenny Springs?! Where have you been all my life?! Personally, I don't like to over-complicate things, so that sounds like a perfect weekend to me!
JD, you didn't have to tell us you were there too, we already knew it! I'm guessing the shorter list is the shows you WEREN'T at... ---------- "Now if you happened to come down here tonight...and you don't wanna hear the person next to you sang, and you don't want'em to dance, cause you might spill your drink, you came to the wrong show in the wrong venue."
