Hey Gang, I neve would have heard about JJ Grey and Mofro, had it not been for Alligator Records. My question for all of you is this, "Besides your own purchases, how much airtime do these guys get, if any in your respective neck of the woods, and where are you located ?" I have put in a few calls to one of the local stations up during the when I am out on the road driveing the work truck minus a cd player, and this station plays Susan Tedeschi, but so far, I think they are allergic to JJ Grey&Mofro. Just trying to get the Word out.
Wow Richard......check your spelling once in a while ! What I was trying to ask was, "Do you guys hear JJ Grey&Mofro on the radio much, if at all in your respective locales ? And where might that be ? Or has their following come mainly from thier live perfomances, and CDs, just growing on their own sans any airtime ?
The University of Pennsylvania's station, WXPN is a supporter of JJ Grey & MOFRO and had been playing tracks from Orange Blossoms in a somewhat regular rotation, they've also had the guys on their Free at Noon show/broadcast a few times. I have also heard "Orange Blossoms" and "On Fire" multiple times on Sirius. ---------- When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years, Then they expect you to pick a career, When you can't really function you're so full of fear, A working class hero is something to be
Our soft rock station (WMMO Orlando) really wanted to play "That boy" on its acqoustic jam set, but thought there was a word that sounded way too much like "sh*t" (Although I don't think that's the word used)
I asked Madison House to send WMMO a copy of Orange Blossoms, and they did not

Ah. A chance for me to rant. It is unfortunate that the majority of stations present in each market are owned by a very small group. And that their playlists come out of a main office in Atlanta--no matter if the station is in Utah--and their content is limited to a group of music fans that buys products from those that try to own the broadcast airwaves.
Clear Channel comes to mind. The chances of hearing it on one of these capitalist-gone-mad stations are slim. Not to say that there aren't commercial stations across the country that play them.
Bands like JJG&M have to focus on AAA radio stations--examples of which giggles and Sunshine have made, and are primarily community funded, or partially underwritten by a university or public radio.
In Tampa we like to think we have the best little radio station in the world. WMNF 88.5 is funded wholly by people in the community. No ties to any group, or any individuals for that matter. They'll play Mofro now and then on their afternoon drive show "Sonic Detour" and there are 2 or 3 other shows of various genre that they'll play them on.
Satellite seems to do a better job with playing them. FM broadcasting has become so formulaic that if you don't fit then there's no chance but with satellite's micro playlisting they've got a better chance of playing them.
Dunno when you asked Madison about that mysnan but Alligator handles all the stuff with radio stations now. If you would request again and direct it to Tim@allig.com and sure everyone would be much obliged.
(The lyrics say "And I know that shit ain't right" but I don't know why they couldn't do sumthin with that?)

---------- "Now if you happened to come down here tonight...and you don't wanna hear the person next to you sang, and you don't want'em to dance, cause you might spill your drink, you came to the wrong show in the wrong venue."
Not to offend personally msynan. And Cox is certainly not as big of an offender just in terms of shear volume of stations compared to CC if nothing else. I know it's frustrating for many in the biz. And I don't know the answers, for sure. It just seems more and more that a "new" artist can't break thru on mainstream radio anymore.

I respectfully disagree...as I often hear new music/bands on the radio, they just tend to suck. They don't call it programming for nothing!

Hey Gang, thanks for the input. At 46, I am not much in favor of everyday radio anymore, and don't even get me started on cornfed television. Since I am back on days, the trucks I drive for work are owned by the County, and there are no cd players, I am stuck like a crack addict in a rolling box, without my CDs, waiting in the Mustang, until the end of the day for my hands to heat them up in the pipe/player and get my jones back on track. A coupe of stations may very well have played dome JJ&Mofro, but they are on the community level, Paul Allen backed, evening, community and college stations who limit their styles or break them up throughout the day. I am burning groves into my CDs, letting friends get a taste , and trying to spread the "Word". To hell with the fools who buy what is fed to them from the corporate schmucks, and hell I am pretty conservative on most things, but sometimes the high rollers don't know a good thing when it bites them in the butt No need for me to waste my time too much with the cornfed stations.
E always knows what to say to put me in my place. But when he starts using words like "respectfully disagree," well...them's fighting words. He may as well called me ass-wipe to m'face or sumthin. And yes I was on my high horse and shouldn't been all ranting off but you ain't got to go getting all respectful and shit or one of us is gonna leave with less teefs than he come wif.

Truth is Richard I'm same with you. The buttons on my radio are probly stuck shut, that's how often I don't use it. And E and mysnan are right and I deserve to cut some slack to stations that are at least trying to hang on to what once was.
The only constant is change. (Sigh.)
To actually answer your original question Richard, live shows seem to be the main way people hear about them. People bringing friends/virgins to shows and they're hooked. Festivals are great because people are coming to check out varied artists. It's impossible to see these guys live and not be hooked. Well, I guess not impossible but stop me before I start making dry comments (like...well I suppose if you're a nun who prefers to listen to nothing but hymns; stop me now or I can't be stopped!)
And mysnan, honest injun I wasn't intentionally picking on Cox. I knew one of them did that but I didn't know which one. Again, no offense intended. It's a subject that I allow to get my thong in a wad and what's not fair is to lump everyone that works for a company together as if everyone is complicit with the decision makers. I know that's far from the truth.

Okay, so the scenario is there's a guy who grew up in a cave. Never heard music in his life. Don't even know the concept. At 30 years old he comes out of his cave and JJ and the boys are performing right there in front of him in the jungle.
Does he like them or not?

I ain't no danncer, God has given me other talents. I am ok with that. But when JJ Grey & Mofro found me, they spoke to my very core and and they literally move me.
So, my guess would be that since this caveman never heard music in his life, he would begin to groove to the soulful sounds of Mofro and his body would just get in the groove and before he knows it, he is dancing, stompin to the beat if you will. He knows not why he is moving in such an odd manner and then he would exclaim:
"Oogh gunga naggah!"
translated: what the #!@&!
realizing this is a good thing: a smile would come across his face and now he is enjoying himself and before he knows it, he is surrounded by other cavenen and women and thus it is concluded, that yes yes yes, he not only likes them, he loves em and has now bought a computer so he can access this website to see all the other devotess out there!!! ---------- "No effort, no gain No effort, stay the same No don’t you ever try to live a lie"
LOL! So, we can thereby conclude that the cavemen were either who invented dancing OR they were the very first Mofro fans. Brilliant!
(One of the vids I've got from the Peel shows a brief shot of Sunshine dancing. I'll find it and point it out. She's right y'all. Poor girl ain't got the beat.)

But Oh Wise One Who Sees All, you already knew the answer............ ---------- "No effort, no gain No effort, stay the same No don’t you ever try to live a lie"
C'mon Clay, maybe she was just doing the "Elaine Dance". The beat is what you make it!
---------- "Now if you happened to come down here tonight...and you don't wanna hear the person next to you sang, and you don't want'em to dance, cause you might spill your drink, you came to the wrong show in the wrong venue."
LOL!!! I have tried to perfect that dance!! working on the "thumbs up" movement, HAAHhaha..........but I must say that I am not that bad......close though...... :o) ---------- "No effort, no gain No effort, stay the same No don’t you ever try to live a lie"
let me help ya Clay, it is on your front page, Brighter Days vid and the very end...........do enjoy me making a fool of meself :o) I did!!! ---------- "No effort, no gain No effort, stay the same No don’t you ever try to live a lie"
From the video, looks like a fairly dead crowd that night (atleast during this song) except those up front and the guy just back from the stage doing the "bobble-head doll" dance.
Brighter Days was the first song, maybe that is why the crowd seems mellow..........the "bobble head" is indeed our very own Mr. TNcracka, whom had the pleasure of catching JJ's harp that night! ---------- "No effort, no gain No effort, stay the same No don’t you ever try to live a lie"
Lol. Talk about Deja Vu. I am sitting at my desk at work, listening to "Brighter Days" from that show, doing my "bobble head" dance in my chair, and I get on the message board, and read this. To quote JJ, "don't be bashful. Sing along from start to finish at this show, and dance, and feel good. There's enough bad shit in the world, let it all out."
We are on the same level Sunshine. I know you got that "Mofro-pod" going right now, enjoying the day.

That is toooo funny TN! I have listened to that concert so many times, I have so many of JJ's lines memorized........especially the one where he talks about Asheville, "even the air feels good going into your lungs"

Hell, we all know it is impossible to NOT be moving at their shows, unless you have zero soul in your body.
I live in the Nashville area. If you are a fan of live music, it is tough to beat. They always put on a helluva show in Nashville. I believe Harriman is in the beautiful mountains of east TN, close to Sunshine's neck of the woods.
Sunshine, it's the exact opposite for me. I can barely walk across the room without tripping & maiming myself and potentially harming others, but I could dance across it like I was in a Soul Train line dance! ---------- When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years, Then they expect you to pick a career, When you can't really function you're so full of fear, A working class hero is something to be

Oh man, now I gotta go back and read the posts, because the band and dude that oened last Sept. in Seattle for JJ&Mofro, well the dude that played a wicked washboard......man, I was two drinks(Makers&7)into it, on very little food, andI can not remember the band... but what a sound. Now I gotta check your above references. As for for Trombone Shorty.....you lucky bastards down South who got that guy in your backyard...... man oh man, I found him online or maybe via Alligator ? What a bucket full energy that guy is, and his sound.....HOT DAMN ! One of his youtube spots, he tells how they did a FIVE HOUR SET !!! All because the vibe from the fans.... MAN!!
My Dad loves jazz, he's lived in Alabama, and been a few times to Norlenz/Nuhorlens/Narhluns/NO/ or as us Yankees so often say...NEW OR LEANS, but man ya'll got a wealth of musical talent down there. I'd love to travel the local scene, back roads joints, and take in the food and sounds..... forget this NW stuff.
Hey, what do you guys in NO call that muxic that is played by highschool marching bands, no sheet music if any, handed down by generation, and almost wiped out by Hurricane Katrina, due to the displacement and loss of knowledge or ability to pass along the music. Heard about it a year ago or two, when some cats from NO were up here to raise money and awarness for keeping that music alive.
Richard, I'm moving to Nawlins at the end of this month. It is indeed a rich musical place. It must be the best music city in the country. Are you talking about the second lines? They're still around. The city is coming back....
Funny Giggles, you walk like Kramer and I dance like Elaine!! (well not quite a "jerky", unless I am absorbing Mofro, then I "flow" a bit more gracefully. I do have a little grace...... :o) ---------- "No effort, no gain No effort, stay the same No don’t you ever try to live a lie"
A MOFRO show brings out the Fly Girl (I think that's what they called the dancers on In Living Color?) in me :p ---------- When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years, Then they expect you to pick a career, When you can't really function you're so full of fear, A working class hero is something to be

Richard, don't desecrate your Maker's by adding ANYTHING to it!!! You don't mess with perfection!
Speaking of good whiskey, any of you in the GNW familiar with Pendletons? From Washington, I believe. Discovered it on a ski trip to Montana years ago and fell in love. The distillery only distributes within a radius of a few states. I inquired at a few liquor stores about getting some to FL, but I'd have to buy a case to get it shipped. And anyone who knows me knows the last thing I need is a CASE of whiskey.

estanley 1, Hey I've done the straight Makers, or on ice too, as I prefer my drinks cold, tea, coffe, hot chocolate and women hot, but usually add something to the Makers, for volume say to absorb, in the event I have not eaten anyting. Hell, having a CDL, and only needing to blow a .04..... well one can't gaet to carried away. Hey, your Pendleton question got me thinking, or reminded me of a thought that I had. Without getting to much into it cause ya neve know if the "Revenuers" are listening, but has anyone ever thought about trading stuff from different parts of the country, i.e., coffee, T-shirts,sorgum,grits,smoked salmon,keylime....pie,music,dirt from dirt tracks, "Pendleton",boiled peanuts, scones, gatorskin belts, gooeyduck shells,......... you name it!
Whoa...how dare you talk so nasty on this board! But since you done did...Cajun boiled peanuts, smoked mullet, smoked amberjack, snook, redfish, gator meat, Seminole meat, venison, Ruskin tomatoes, best watermelon in the South and the finest Cuban coffee (Ybor City) north of Havana...you name the trade. Richard, I'm liking you more and more! Pendleton is the Real Deal Holyfield.

E...silver queen corn, Cuban bread, collards, mustards, blue crabs, Plant City strawberries, all sorts of Ybor City stuff/garb, Bucs/Bulls/Rays/Lightning stuff, little replicas of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge with little people jumping off.
Richard, y'all got some good ass coffee up there; salmon too. I do have a couple questions though: how come y'all's key lime pie is better than ours? We can grow...well...key limes here. And, what in the name of Aunt Berthas hairy breasts are gooeyduck shells??
But really, just call me Sgt. Schultz. I see nothing! ---------- MofroFan1 "I've bought houses in less time than it takes for a woman to shop for a skirt and blouse." ~Lewis Grizzard
I am with you on the Plant City Strawberries and Tampa Cuban Bread (El Segundo Bakery), but the best greens I've ever had were from GA, AL...but you do know that IS the Fertile Cresent. a gooeyduck shell, and correct me if I am wrong, is a large shellfish clamlike crustacean ...........and the stone crabs...........they need nothing, not even butter, they are so sweet. I always git me a mess of stone crabs when I go back home.
---------- "No effort, no gain No effort, stay the same No don’t you ever try to live a lie"
Hmph...gooeybread shell. I think he's making that shit up.
E, then you ain't never had greens from central/north Florida--from about Sorrento/Plymouth and up the e side of the scrub right on up to Palatka and points west. MmmmMM. And if you ain't had taters from Spuds (a few miles w of St. Aug) then you ain't had taters. ---------- MofroFan1 "I've bought houses in less time than it takes for a woman to shop for a skirt and blouse." ~Lewis Grizzard
OK Gang, as for gooeyduck shells, well ther aint much you could or would want to do with them, except make ash trays, or very large necklaces out of them. The gooeyduck itself though, is like a giant clam, and makes for some killer chowder, and fried up is pretty darn good too ! My grandfather used to dig them up,cook, and eat them like candy. He was an avid saltwater fisherman too. Lived right on the beach, drove bus for the city, fished a helluva lot, and broiled his steaks from time to time right on the open fire in his living room fire place on his custom rack. Man that always smeeled soooo good. Hell, I can't forget his homemade wine, which he made for years.... hell again, every year, his buddies would show up down there, and bring things to offer up for trade, cheese, crackers, food, desert, get haircuts, you name it..... all to sample "Grandpa Ed's/Big Ed's " wine. I will never forget his buddy Perry, who enjoyed his drink, and would park the Seattle Transtit bus down the street at the end of the line. Perry would walk down, pay a visit to my Grandpa Ed, eat lunch, dinner or both, have some wine.... and then my Grandpa would ask "Hey Perry, don't you a a bus waiting for you down there ? Well, Jeezus Christ, you better go get it and get it back to the barn." Those were the good ol' days. Smoked salmon, sturgeon, Tully's Starbuck's, local coffees, Something from Pike Place Market, Autographed Candlebox CD....maybe, since my brother is friends with the lead singers brother, Apples&Cotletts candy, as for the keylime pie, who up here makes it like the place down in Destin, Fl, accross from the "Big Kahunna" ? Hell, I brought back sorgum for someone once, so let's do some tradin'.
Why cook it when you can just pop it in your mouth?!
