It seems that the 1/16/09 SIGMA PHI EPSILON FRAT HOUSE show has sparked a lot of conversation and serious discussion (unlike my silly idea) as to how to go about setting up a MOFRO "private event". Clay was afraid that the topic would get buried in the 1/16 & 1/17/09 SETLISTS thread and requested that a new one be started and dedicated to that subject.....so here it is, let the brainstorming begin:)

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I copied everyone's ideas from the previous thread for easy viewing:

(My Idea)
If all of us chip in and do like a fans only show I am down. But where? Pinellas County or Hillsborough County?

I could see the band play Coachman Park in Clearwater (FL)...but I'm sure the security would be a lot of $$$$

I could also see the band playing Vinoy Park (St. Pete, FL)..but again security would be a lot of $$$

I have another crazy idea as well..my hometown of Largo (FL) has Largo Central Park and the Largo Cultrual Center..both places are small (with the exception of the huge park) and the Largo Police dept is always willing to help with security. I saw The Neville Brothers at the Largo Summerfest in the park last year, and it was a blast. There's also a hotel right across the street from Largo Central Park and the Largo Cultural Center.

But then again this is my fantasy to see this band by the water and/or around Pinellas/Hillsborough Counties in Florida. And I understand on logistically inprobable this would be outdoors with stage, band mates, crew and security.

If we could think of a place indoors would be even better...private night a Jannus Landing? The State Theater? What About any Tampa places? Tampa Theater? Just shooting some thoughts here...

(SW's Idea):

Hollis and I have talked more than a few times about having a private list party back when there was just the Mofro list. We wanted to have it at the Bamboo Room....two nights.....first night open to the public and second night for list members only. Unfortunately, it never happened.....maybe one day!!

I actually looked into a private showing about a year ago and the person I had spoke with said that for the whole band, gas, etc. runs "about" 5K. We could easily get even 100 people to chip in $50 a head........wheels they are a turning........

I have another idea as well...Actually this idea is from Jake:

Have a show at Ft. DeSoto Park, or at the Fort itself. There's not sound ordinace there and you'll be on a exclusive island with no one around.

I'm down to pitch in for this, hell I can cook Puerto Rican food for the band b/c I'm sure they never had it before. And my boy Jake can whip up some southern food...and definetly get that Ho(e) Cake crackin'

(Sunshine's Idea [2]):

Yes, I was told roughly 5K depending on how far they had to travel, but if they have to travel to their backyard..........Heck, we could canoe the Ocklawaha River and set up camp......yes, even if is double, and it is 10K, it is still very possible. I have a bunch of peeps in Pinellas I have turned onto Mofo, but are still "virgins" that most surely would be interested.

(Clay [2]):

I love the way all y'all are thinking! Keep in mind though that the site gets as much or more people from outside Florida than in Florida, much less the Tampa Bay area.

Perhaps this could be done in a couple or so areas of the country. Or perhaps instead of the Tampa area go further north like Gainesville-ish. That opens it up at least to people in N. Florida and S. Ga and S. Ala.

Otherwise, I'm gonna sit on the sidelines on this and let y'all keep brainstorming and see where it all goes. Frank's brain is going so fast I'll bet he's got smoking comin' out his ears.

But if y'all really think this is gonna keep going somewhere, I'd ask somebody to open a new thread for it so people can find it. Otherwise it'll get buried here in under the wrong topic. Thanks!

(Giggles [2]):

What about if we tied this in with the Dream Setlist contest? If everyone that submits a setlist also makes a donation in the amount of $50, the winner of the contest really could have JJ play in their living room, and of course everyone that made a donation would be on the guest list. Wishful thinking, I know, but just imagining JJ playing my set list in my home is enough to cause me to go into cardiac arrest!

Thanks for all your work getting these all moved over here Frank! You saved me a lot of time. I've moved over what's left over there to over here.

(dirtcracker)
i think if it happens we should try for an "all-request" show.
of course that would take some voting. a poll that lists all the songs they've ever played but you're only allowed to vote for a certain amount of songs...then the results are given to the band and its up to them to put them together as a set.

PERSONALLY, i wouldn't like going to the show knowing what the setlist was gonna be already. i get that enough with DMB. i don't need Mofro doing that too. but thats just my thoughts on it.

(fnovoa)
dirt..i'm a huge dmb fan too, so I know what you mean

(giggles)
I totally see your point and agree with you dc. Like I said, it was more a matter of the wishful imaginings of the band performing in my living room (not that they would even fit) that prompted my illconceived post:p

All ideas are good giggles! In the brainstorming process it's good to offer all ideas--no matter how "ill-conceived"--because they lead to other possible ideas. No thoughts are bad at this point! Keep 'em coming y'all!!

The Ocklawaha River is within 15 minutes of Lochloosa. The Gore's Landing pull out is accessible by motorhome (place for their rig) electricity, parking, tent areas, as well as a group area that I beleive accomodates about 75-ish folks. I checked into this the same time I checked into the cost of having the band to a private show about a year ago. Our dream was to invite the members of the band to canoe down from the Silver Springs put in and pull out at Gore's Landing (about4-5 hrs later) and cook up some bbq and have the band do an amazing semi-accoustic set on the land that JJ holds so close to his heart and that has inspired Lochloosa and many of his songs. Who knows, it may be more intimate and may appeal to the band to have a relaxed day on the river, followed by good food, good friends......good times. Even those who did not want to do the river, they could just meet at Gore's Landing for the day and even get a hotel at night instead of tenting it.

And that, my friends, is my Mofro Dream.

ps, I love the idea of mixing in the Dream Set List somehow.

Yep they are there all right, years (and I mean about 15 years) ago, my soulmate and I were doing this river and saw a gator that was black as coal and he estimated the length to be over 12 feet.

guys, i would stay away from these ideas in my opinion. bands (im not saying this band or all bands) are not big fans of private events.. Also, these private shin digs only happen because the buyer offers up a hefty fee for the band to come and play. I don't recommend trying something like this..

Danny, I wouldn't think that it would be a problem as long as the location is in line with the tour. I could see where it could get expensive if they were playing on the west coast and the private party was scheduled on the east coast a day or two later, after which they would be heading up north or back out west again. Then it would be just like any other show. I'm sure if everyone pitched in, we could come up with a little extra for the band...not to mention, I would think the band might enjoy playing for a room full of people that knows each and every song.

I know the Radiators LOVE playing private parties....they are usually the sickest shows the band plays all year.

My shower stall has amazing acoustics, and the price is right, but there'd be no room for JJ's piano.

she [grandma] has my dad, and my 2 uncles, my brother jesse and maybe jake the snake....but I can put in a good word for you. Her house and property in puerto rico is really to die for (no pun intended). 10 acres on the water...only a 20 min ferry to Vieques and Culebra and a 1hr feery to the U.S and British Virgin Islands. Word.

Hey Danny, what if we tried to do something like Freaksball?? I'm sure we could come up with something. Seems like there are alot of fans here that would love a "private" show and possibly have the $$ to do it.

Hey..what about if we can contact the folks at the RibFest and/or Tampa Bay Blues Fest and have JJ and they boys play there. We can find some avenues instead of doing a private even just have them play more festivals in the tampa-st. pete.

I understand your point Danny...totally.

What I'm saying is that have the guys play the Tampa Bay Blues Fest and/or RibFest. I'm pretty show the avenues are open, and I can contact the promoter here in St. Pete. A lot of people would love JJ Grey & Mofro to headline or even open for a Coco Montoya, Robert Cray and/or Muddy Waters for the TBBF.

The Sarasota Blues Fest had a good turn out (even though they should've headlined that show) but the Tampa Bay Blues Fest always has a huge turnout. Even with Robert Cray play sometimes peeps show up in masses to see him. I feel the same way with JJ Grey & Mofro at this event. I personally think it would blow up..and right in Vinoy Park in St. Pete overlooking the water would be dope.

Now, I don't know anything about promotion, so I see hwere your coming from Danny. I'm off the private gig thing...but every year the city of Largo does a summer fest and had The Neville Brothers there and from my sources the Neville Brothers only asked the city $4000 to play the show. Not bad. Largo's finest provided the security...there were food and alcohol vendors that the nevilles also got a cut on. So, In my opinion if the band can do something like that its a win win.

But again what do I know? Just some ideas...

A lot of peeps will be there, and I'm sure the boys will be paid.
