I have a dear friend, Carl, whom I have known for over 18 years. We used to live in Dunedin, FL and we attended many of the Dunedin "Wines the Blues" festivals together, just abuot 10 of the Largo "Bay Area Renaissance festivals", and walked downtown to see the Dunedin Mardi Gras ......good times.......
I have turned him onto the music of Mofro about 2 years ago and he does dig their sound. I let him know everytime they are playing at Tipatina's or in Baton Rouge, but there is always a "reason" he can not attend. He can walk to the Varsity from his own home.
You all are so great and have such admiration and love for Mofro that makes for such an amazing bond between us all. This is where I need your assistance. I need y'all to let him know what it is like to experience the energy, the emotion, that is at a live Mofro show.
I plan on emailing him this thread or a link to this thread in hopes he will take that next step. I know with y'all's assitance we can bring another loved one over to our side.
Love ya Carl!!!
Peace ---------- "Lord feel that vibe, Lord feel that vibe....."
First, to others on the board, help a fan out here. I know there are several of you with inspirational Mofro stories to tell. Okay?
Carl, for 5 days I've been trying to think of the perfect thing to get you to the show. But what may be 'perfect' to me may be lame to you.
So, I decided first of all to tell you how envious I am. To have a friend like Karla do this for you is pretty amazing. Friendships that last for 18 years are not common, my man. It's way cool and maybe as a sign of returning her love you could do this for her.
As for the energy at a show, while I like dirtcracker's suggestion above, it doesn't give you that true rush you get from being there. Much of the energy comes from JJ. His strong, but soulful, voice is incredible live. The commitment he puts into each song makes it seem like he's singing it live for the first time (rather than the umpteenth that it actually is.)
Whether it's on guitar or keyboard he plays with passion but doesn't overwhelm the band. When he picks up a harp, watch out. Unless you're handicapped there will be no way that you won't dance. These guys jam. And they know which songs to jam to. Even if you're the worst dancer to ever walk the face of the earth--and know it--you'll be out there cuttin' a rug.
The talent in the band's lineup is literally world-class. When you watch them you'll go from smiling to laughing to staring in awe...and much more.
The feeling of a live Mofro concert is uplifting, like a high. It's like a religous experience without the religion involved. It's like an orgasm but instead of wanting to roll over and sleep you want to do it again and again and again (and again.) It's like a drug, but not nearly as expensive; it may be addictive but it's not harmful to your health, has not been deemed to kill brain cells, does not cause cancer, lung disease, heart disease, or liver disease (although the alcohol consumed might!)
Lastly, it will move you. I can't say in what way, but during or after the show you will be moved. It may be an intense rush of energy and happiness; it might be excitement; it may be a sense of appreciation; maybe a connection or feeling of empathy; even emotionally involved. Or something else. But it will be a wonderful feeling and you will be enormously glad you did it. ---------- MofroFan1 MOFROFANS.COM -- all Mofro, all the time

great post Clay. i agree 100%. i do a lot of stuff solo...A LOT.
i had a friend back out on a Mofro show literally 15 mins before we were suppose to hit the road. i drove home furious. got home, decided to eff it and take off on my own. this would mark my first Mofro show solo. one of the best choices i've ever made.
as soon as they hit the stage my mood changed immediately. everything that had happened leading up to the show was immediately forgotten. met some pretty cool people there as well who were seeing them for the first time. this was pre-Country Ghetto so we got to hear some of the "soon-to-be" new stuff off the record as well as a "Seminole Wind" encore due to fans in the front asking for it all night. aslo marked my first setlist from them.
i left there with the NEED to tell others about the show. immediately called a friend in cali and told them about the show and the energy the band had put into it and the energy i was feeling. i even got lost leaving the city because i missed a turn i was suppose to take. this phone call eventually led to him and a friend going to see them later in the year when they were doing the west coast tour.
It is indeed. And if some other people don't jump on here and join in on the subject I'm gonna start nasty rumors about every single one of them. Especially THESE people: antsyashley (flunked out of nursing school), Kimberly (secretly a big fan of polka), JohnDude (actually a woman), estanley (an avid FSU fan) and FireFly (she's not from this planet.) I'll take it all back if y'all will chime in. (Maybe) I'll even say please! ---------- MofroFan1 MOFROFANS.COM -- all Mofro, all the time
ahhhh, it's all good! My soulmate and I are going to head back to our old stomping grounds of Dunedin in a couple of weeks....great airfare - $68 a piece round trip, can't beat that. Gonna leave the kids home and enjoy the Pinellas Trail, do some bar hopping along the way, grab a Falafal and the Bread & Butter!! Life is Good!! ---------- "Lord feel that vibe, Lord feel that vibe....."
I'm in New Orleans again! Been too busy researching taping, getting back into the school semester, traveling, unpacking and packing, and traveling again! I went to class Monday and Tuesday, then found out I don't have class again til Tuesday (another week of vacation?! And no, Clay, it's not because I flunked out!). Decided to come down to New Orleans! I'm at a Community Coffee shop on Magazine St. using the internet now. The Big Easy is an infectious place.
JJ Grey & Mofro -- now that is the best band around. I am completely fortunate beyond words to be able to experience them -- whether LIVE, via studio recorded CD, taped show, hanging out and chatting with them or any of their awesome crew, meeting the incredibly generous and cool fans, or anticipating the next show I can attend.
Your friend is missing out on one of the amazing joys of life if he does not go to a Mofro show or pop a Mofro CD in the player.
I could talk all day about the band, the songs, the talent, the generosity, the fun, the passion. I agree with Clay and the rest of the posters on here. There is just too much to say to try to make something concise for this board.
Sunshine, I will most likely be at the Varsity show in BR. Perhaps I could get in touch with your friend and hook up at the show. I might be bringing a few more Mofro virgins along. ---------- Fill your soul with music and joy.
I found that I could spend a million words('specially in german we even got longer words) on why somebody should go somewhere and check out something I thought was great. here is what I found works pretty good ( cause that is what somebody said to me about goin to see mofro for the first time)
DUDE, JUST GO !
now if you like live music you will, because you are not afraid to check out new sounds and you end up falling in love with e new band, and if ya don't , than I can't help ya !
