December 10th marks 41 years since Otis Redding's passing at age 26 in a plane crash. In his short life, he left us with amazing music to always remember. And his influence can be heard and felt in so many artists, including our dear JJ Grey and the guys of Mofro.

A little video of Otis Redding singing "I've Been Loving You"

Just the other day I was watching "Monterey Pop" and Otis Redding's performance there was historic, monumental, a tidal wave of pure soul, or in more simple terms it was epic. On the second night of the festival, well beyond curfew, Otis stormed the stage and the world hasn't been the same since. He captivated the audience of long haired hippies with his earthiness and candor and literally saturated the very air around him with his gritty, gravelly, emotion laden voice until the counter-culture crowd was drenched in deep southern soul. The Monterey Pop Festival was filled with some very notable career defining performances, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin; but NO ONE owned the stage and hearts of the audience the way that Otis Redding did. It was literally the performance of a lifetime; six short months later the world was robbed of the great talent of Otis Redding. So if you haven't heard the Monterey Pop performance, do yourself a favor and hit the hyperlink above and bask in the magic of the late, great, original soul man.

Giggles, glad you posted that. I've been wondering where I could hear some live Otis. Phenomenal show. I think I might have been there in spirit.
