Yeah, skotdee, great ain't it? Just wait til you meet him. He's even cooler than his screen name. And man, once the music starts he never stops. Between him and JohnDude, they got enough energy to power up a small 3rd world country.
This story ran yesterday on festivalpreview.com. Since I ain't going, I ain't paid much attention, so this may be old news to those of ya that is.
Bear Creek Festival adds a day, opens Thursday
Although displayed on the site's main page as running from November 14th-16th, the schedule indicates that a day appears to have been added at the beginning. So the event will supposedly start on Thursday the 13th, featuring additional performances by Perpetual Groove and The Motet. Other headliners include JJ Grey and Mofro, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, etc., etc.
The now 4-day event will be held once again at the Spirit of the Suwannee in Live Oak, FL. The park offers camping sites and cabins. Attractions like canoe trips, disc golf, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, plus many activities for the kids will be offered. In addition to the music, the festival features a variety of visual artists and craft vendors such as Raymun Jarvis, Carrie Curtis, Odendo, and Morgan Steele, among others. This art will be for sale to attendees.
The North Florida Daily News (the local rag) put up this story yesterday about Bear Creek. I dunno if there's anything in it that y'all don't know, but figured I'd pop it on here just in case. HERE ---------- MofroFan1
thanks beauFro, I would love to take a ride back with you guys whenever ya leavin. I'm def won't be in shape to go anywhere sun night, except to find some orange blossoms. we might have to all cuddle together , its suppose to get down to the 30's on sunday. but i'm pretty sure mofro will get us hot for the night.
All y'all be safe! I ain't gonna say "have a great time!" cause well, I already know you will. Can't wait to hear the stories/see the pics/hear the show.
Y'all. I wish I could hop on the bus with the guys and travel down to Florida after the show Saturday night. Hmmm, do I need to call in sick Monday?? ---------- Good things are goin' on!
just to let ya'll know, I found johndude and beaufro. I walked around campsite and I heard lochloosa, they were playing their carstereo, fun! than i ran into a guy that i always end up parking next to at skippers.
couple of other guys had mofro blasting in their golfcart.
last night was of the HOOK ! dubconscious>telepath>Pgroove
gr8f98 and beaufro seriously know how to bust a move !last night was definetely a great workout.
this is my favorite festivalgrounds, suwannee river is so amazing,I can't wait to hear jj's voice float thru the live oak trees, that's gonna be beautiful.
I'm working the volunteer check-in tent, kinda bored, but I'll be done at 5, and my workefforts earned me a backstage pass, with free beer, so these updates could get kinda slobberish....
The Bear Creek Festival is on the site of The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Fl. The Suwannee river runs right through this amazing park....home to both the Suwannee Spring Fest (usually in March or April) and Magnolia Fest (in October)......oh yea, it also hosts the Wannee Festival. The scenery there is just incredible all of you should check it out sometime!
So many times I felt like I was at Jazzfest...So many times I felt like a was a little kid playing in the woods...So many times I felt like a complete spaz...
A few highlights: Most insane show = "Lettuce" (Rage is an understatement) Best undiscovered artist = "Zack Deputy" (holy shit!!!) Funkiest show of the fest = it's a tie, between "Dr. Claw" and the "Dumpstaphunk Allstar Jam"(someone was setting off mortars in the middle of the crowd)| Best Bluegrass Act: Yonder Mountain Most Mindblowing Performance in the rain: PGroove Best Damn Bratwurst: Skotdee's quick burnin' grille Best R&B Review: Legendary JC's Best Groovable show: Shak Nasti (with A/C on keys & Chris Bell on harp) Damn Good Show: New Mastersounds
Best Show of All Bear Creek: M O F R O !!!! With Skerik on Sax, Big Sam on Trombone, Kofi Burbridge on JJ's nord and Flute, Matt Grondin on Guitar, Chris Bell on Harmonica, Clay on Trombone This was friggin' rediculous!!! and yes...we taped. Skotdee(AKG480 omni's) & myself(AKG480 cards) were running our mics in a "WTF" configuration.
Fri & Sat mornings we rode our bikes down this long boat ramp(NO BRAKES!) and flipped over the handlebars into the Suwanee River...several times! Sunday morning it was too dang cold!
Such a beautiful venue, very healing energy...if you ain't been...get your ass to SOSMP asap!
Hard not to write a novel about how BAD ASS this whole thing was, but I'll leave the rest up to the other folks.
Oh, Stan...Papa was the "Artist at Large" like Derek Trucks and Skerik, they sat in with several bands...there wasn't a Papa Mali set(I wish there was)

So, John, you still coming down for Papa Mali this Saturday? If not, send your gear so I can tape. And just so you know, the external drive made it safely. In fact, I have the 11/25/05 (Atlanta matrix) uploading as I type.

I agree with all said by john.( yo, I have that zach deputy song stuck in my head " twisted-twisted) it was jazzfest funkiness in the woods of suwannee.
thursday , there was 2 stages setup in the music hall, alternating acts, all crazy dancable music. dubconscious > telepath > motet w) hollingsworth >zach deputy > Pgroove ( telepath my favorite )
friday, I only slept 3 hrs and after working 10 hrs I HAD to take a nap, so I kinda missed half of dumpstaphunk.on somebody recommendation I went to see mcTuff at the music hall. it had skerik in it, I gotta lockup who those other guys were, but the dude on the hammond B3 was sick ! closed it out with lettuce
saturday, yonder yonder !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lettuce and the dumpstaphunk jam, they def. brought it ! they do this cover of "unfortunate son " and it went into the soprano song ( woke up this morning with a boomboom in my eye)SICK!
sunday , woke up to buffalo strange, liked them, also john brown's body ( thats the name of a band not that strange guy that I ..oh never mind), anthony(!) jammin on keyboards with shak nasti
there was all kinds of jamming out going on in the campgrounds at night with lots of bonfires.
sunday night they had the last band play by the treehouse and I got to hang with the folks I worked with.
BUT my personal highlight of the whole weekend was :
DANCING LIKE A MADWOMAN WITH ALL OF YOU MOFROFREAks !!! the band brought a great energy to the stage, I liked all the sitins, especially the horns section, you guys are awesome
and it was #$%^* cold like a mother... on sundaynight ! it was hot and humid for 2 days and than the iceage moved in,WTF.? as a result I'm fuckin sick with a nasty cold, but thats what ya get when you run around wearing a dress on one night and the next putting on all the clothes that you brought. only whiskey and mofro brought some temporarly relief.
there is so much more I could say but just in case my mother, law enforcement, boyfriends, employers, and etc read this I plead the fifth.
excuse me while I crawl back into bed peace out !!! firefly
P.S. Gr8ful98 and beauFro , the energy you guys have ruled my world this past weekend, you guys did not miss one note of music Scotdee, when I handed you the bottle and told you to finish it , your eyes lit up like a child on christmas morning locked into FAOschwarz without his mommy, PRICEless!!
I have pictures but I have to figure out the flickr-slideshow-embedding in message - thing. just gimme until my cottonball filled head feels a normal size again
Whew, just cleared my head and crawled out from underneath a pile of work long enough to chime in here. WOW, that might have been the best fest I've been to yet. What an amazing weekend. There's not much I can add that Dude & Firefly haven't already thouroughly covered, LOVE the "John Dude Awards"! You know Im going to expect those for every fest now John... Glad you liked the Brats man, "so good they'll make a vegetarian eat meat" ;-) I had some dreadlock rasta dude callin me BratMan everytime he saw me for the rest of the weekend after those! I'll add to the sentiment of what a truly magical place Spirit of Suwannee is, what a Florida Treasure! LOVE the new disc golf course! WOW, WOW, WOW. What an amazing place.
Yes Firefly, seeing you emerge from the crowd at the end of the Mofro set with a fat shot of Makers made my night. (didn't I take the first shot from that bottle also? Bookends!) THANK YOU for your hospitality. My buddy Mark was next to me salivating, I said "sorry Mark, that was a one shotter" or something like that, God knows If I remember I wasn't there...
I pulled some great recordings from what I've checked out so far. I'll get to work on getting these uploaded asap now that Im getting back to speed. No other sources have popped up for the Mofro set as of yet, so of course I'll get to work on it first...
your welcome, scotdee ( as I bow in royal fashion ) with all these whiskey lovin mofros I gotta get a bigger bottle next time, I like to share the 'fun', good thing I'm not a size 0, there's always a place to Hide things on my body or wardrobe..;)
OMG my jaw still hasn't come up off the floor from reading all this. I am sooooo bummed we didn't go. It just wasn't in the cards. Damn. And I spent part of the weekend with my in-laws and the rest doing work. At least I get to hear about all the fun from you guys though! Thanks for sharing the vibes with all of us. Lookin' forward to hearing everything you got skot. Firefly, email me if you need a hand with embedding your flickr stuff--I got your back (plus I want to see the pics!)
GREAT PICS/GREAT RECORDINGS. Thanks Skotdee & Firefly.
I'm still buried under my pile of work, I came back from BearCreek & got a new position at work. TONS of responsibility, but it involves travel...so you know what that means.
I hope to get to my recordings soon, or maybe I'll just bring 'em to Stan 2maro night @ PAPA MALI.
Stan...are you up for that? ---------- "throwin' pennies on the tracks and playin' in the rain...oblivious of the world around us that was going insane"
Thanks for sharing those pics FireFly. Looks like a fun time was had by all.
