Very cool poll Clay, and the results do not surprise me. Although I went back and forth with you over the FUNKIEST tune, my overall vote still went to I Believe. I Love this album and ALL the songs, but I can't argue with I Believe taking the top spot, LOVE that tune. Im jealous of the lucky folks that have heard that one live, can't wait to catch one!
Keeping in mind that I have more time to post stuff than I do to read it, I do recall reading somewhere recently that JJ said The Truth is inspired by the car accident that JJ, his wife, their tour manager, and Nathan Shepard (keyboard player at that time) were in back in Oct, 2001. After playing the first show of the opening tour for Lochloosa, they were driving home when someone going over 100 mph hit them from behind. JJ's wife was the most banged up of all and it took her quite some time to fully recover. ---------- MofroFan1
“The Truth” — This is a gospel song inspired by a fatal automobile accident that Grey survived. “The truth is you’re not in control. I’m not even in control of what I think. I certainly can’t control the songs I write. I just try to let it happen.”
Also his thoughts on other songs on the album…HERE
I will say Ash.....that first line “darling….wait for me”....is heart melting

I remember reading about that to with the Truth being about the car accident. That was the reason for such a delay in the next album as well as thier hiatus in shows around that time. I remember there being a charity fund started to help out with the bills towards the medical complications of the accident and to keep the band going. From what I recall, the accident happened in Florida while they were heading home. Thank god everyone made it through ok, The Truth is something truely beautiful to come from such an unfortunate accident. JJ is still alive and bringing it full force. I wish I could thank him everyday, but I know if I did, I would get the same answer. "Gotta make a living bro" Well, that maybe so, I just hope he's living the dream, cuz his music keeps me going everyday.
As for the other songs, one that amazed me is that On Fire was originally written back in 1996 if I remember right what I read before? Correct me if I'm wrong. Wouldn't surprise me with Dew Drops and She Don't Know making on to this album to go all the way back to 96' and pull up the disco style funky get up on the downstroke ON FIRE. ---------- Delerious Tyme
Mofro for life in Arizona The Rhythm Room is exactly that when the boys are kicking it here. "Walking on Moonlight in the Day."
Thank you Kimberly! I knew I had read it somewhere. I have that interview in my files with about 20 or so others to post.
The article that includes the info about the accident was written in 2002 and has a lot of introspective into JJ's life and upbringing. There is one inaccuracy that JJ recently pointed out to me; I don't know if there may be more. He said he has never been a professional surfer. When he was a young man he traveled to some foreign locales on some surfing junkets with friends that were/are also avid surfers. (You'll also note that back then, he was pretty much 'John.')
It's scary, sad, and amazing what they went through. Unbelievable, and so fortunate, that their lives were spared. They have certainly 'risen from the ashes' and have gone on to tour like maniacs and produce perfect albums. And JJ has, as usual, put that inspiration into some beautiful music.
BTW, skot, as I recall I won that debate. At least in my mind that's how I remember it. But I have to admit your knowledge of 70s funk is beyond mine. (And if you tell anyone that I'll deny it.)
