And I never thought I would be with this band. Let me say first off I would pay pretty much whatever and go as far as I could to see this band of our we call Mofro, but I have run into some BS circumstances.
The show here in Utah tommorow was originaly supposed to be at the Murray Theater Tix WERE $18, I know because I bought one. My wife this morning (day before show mind you) says "mom will watch our baby so I want to go to the show". EXCELLENT love seeing shows with my wife. So About an hour ago I go to buy another ticket. Well a ticket to the show is now $28!!!!! I am pretty pissed. I mean #1 the show originaly was 10 miles from my house and 10 bucks cheaper. Now its 45 miles away and $28!! The boys are now playing an after party for some teaton movie release (which I am sure is cool and all) But it is now at the most expensive bar in park city.
So needless to say in the past 2 weeks someone has figured out how to make an extra $10 on the band per ticket. I would GLADLY give that $10 extra over to darryl and say go buy more Orange Blossoms to sell, But its not its going into someone elses Pocket. Anyway enough of the rant, just had to get it off my chest.
DFcracka, sho don't sound right does it? Can't blame you for being pissed. My old pappy used to say "Son," that's what he'd call me, son, "if something looks like a rotten fish, and it walks like a rotten fish, and it talks like a rotten fish, then it smells like rotten fish."
One time I said "Pappy," that's what I used to call him, Pappy, "That don't make a lick of sense and top of that I din't think no fish could walk and talk." And he backhanded me across the room.
What I learned from that experience is a) don't backtalk your pappy lest ye want a knuckle sammich, and b) when something smells, you can smell it.
Now, if that makes sense to ya'll, I have no idea how.
I'll pass this along to some folks I know. It doesn't seem to pass the smell test does it? This is the type of thing that every company, band, store...whatever needs to avoid. Everyone is watching pennies and figuring out what they can afford and not. Those who provide the complete customer experience will rise to the top.
And I agree that it's not only the money, but also the appearance of greed and/or poorly planned out.
There could be a perfectly logical, fair explanation that we're not aware of. But perception is often viewed as reality, so if there is a good explanation it would be good to hear it so the mis-perception could be cleared.
I've not a clue what happened, nor can I assure you that anything will come of it, but I do assure you that I'll pass this along so that someone in management is aware that someone feels this way (which usually means there are many more.) ---------- MofroFan1

Thank you and really like I said I will drive to the end of the earth and pay whatever to see this band....It just sent up some red flags. Thanks for your support. Now that it is off my chest I can fly through this day at work and go get my head rattled and my soul filled tonight. I love this place and this band!!
Thanks DFcracka, that's sounds like a cool plan to me. Wish I were you today!!
I sent a direct link to this page, so what we're writin' is what they're readin'. They probly hate me for putting them on the spot like this, but I do feel that if you feel this way and you're a HUGE fan, how do first-timers, or those that may have seen the band one time 4 years ago and figured what the hell gonna think?
I'm not implying that there is anything surreptitious going on at all, I, again just feel like if anything else we don't want any market to feel like something smells bad (I won't do the fish thing again; that was earrrrrrly this morning--as in before bedtime early.)
I think it would be especially bad to piss off all the Mormon concert-goers in Utah, as I'm sure the band has a big following with them.
(Sorry, bad Mormon joke. I've worked with a lot of Mormons though--they poke fun at their vow against all stimulant substances--they'd laugh. I had a Mormon boss once--one of my best bosses ever--and I worked for him for 2 years--in an ad agency no less--and never heard him curse once. I tell you I don't believe he would say shit if he had a mouth full of it.) ---------- MofroFan1
You would be suprised at the turn-out at shows here and how the energy the boys bring is incredible. In fact the last show here (at the Urban lounge) They were having such a good time JJ said (which he probably says everywhere more or less) That "we love coming here its the best kept secret west of the mississippi to play a show here"
I really am not trying to ruffle feathers with this post at all. I have been a devout fan since Blackwater was released and I know it is not the band doing this they may have just got swirlled into something and did not get all the details. Regardless it 12 hours I will be balls deep into some front porch soul....And for that I am a happy man
And I'm happy for you man! You din't ruffle no feathers. I'm the kind of person that when I see someone who feels wronged I'll speak up. It doesn't always mean they have been wronged, I just think it's good business when an entity knows what people are saying. Ain't nobody said to me "don't send any complaints, just send us good stuff..." As you said, it could be consequences they're unaware of or had no choice.
"See this nickel? It used to be a quarter!" --Coach of The Chiefs, movie:Slapshot, the ONLY hockey movie, starring the late Paul Neuman.
Nobody likes to pay more. BUT...
The cost of bands that tour like JJ&M has more than doubled very, very recently. Heck, just last week the price of crude oil jumped almost 20 bucks in a single day - It's not been THAT long since oil cost 20 freaking dollars TOTAL per barrel. Add the fact that more than a few Americans are rubbing nickels together to start their cooking fire... OK I'm getting carried away, but the public doesn't have as much loose capital as it did just 2 years ago (largely related to the oil prices).
So what does that mean to MOFRO? WAY more expensive costs to get around and tour. Less likelyhood of you and I being able to attend shows. Eventually, the bands and clubs flip the sign on the door and go back to the lumberyard.
Take it from someone that lives so close to the Bamboo Room, I have stumbled home on foot more than once. That venue is closed, and it was one of the best places to hear blues in the entire country. The rising cost of travelling bands (not their fault, just the way it is), versus smaller crowds that tended to spend less per person, meant everyone was losing money.
Music feeds MY soul, but I still make a big, fat sandwich after a show. These bands are no different. No matter how much they love doing this, they can't lose money and do it for long.
Unfortunately, I suspect more and more of these clubs are going to sink, and the way bands tour will have to follow suit. There is a real possibility you are seeing the end of this culture, at least for a while.
So... for the here and now, be greatful you were able to attend. And keep attending. And drag as many friends along as you can. Buy CD's, shirts, and of course as many beer coozies as you can.
Very well said tox. All too true, and I agree that with our economy the way it is--and there is no 'quick fix'--anything can happen to any company, service, entity of any kind.
That said, I have been in communications with band representatives on this because the issue more at hand was that DFcracka bought his ticket for $18 and then later bought a tick for his wife and it was $28. The cost of the show went up $10--and it wasn't promoted that way, like buy your tick by such-and-such date or it goes up $10.
I'm down with both ya'll on it, seriously. I know a band in Atlanta, all these guys work 'real' jobs, that won't go out of the state because gas costs have gone up but what they get paid hasn't.
But I also think that a $10 tick price increase, unannounced, could potentially leave a bad taste in some people's mouths.
I'm particularly concerned for newbies. What if me and a couple friends were going, we bought our tix for $18 each 3 weeks out, the next week we convince 3 more friends to go that have never seen or heard of them? They go to order their tix and they're $28 each. They call me and my friends and we all say hey WTF?
I see it as a perception issue, and even if it kind of miffed only a handful of people, if there's something to do to avoid it in the future then you can't do it if you don't know it.
Something apparently is not passing the smell test because since I first emailed management about it I've been in contact back and forth with representatives of the band twice on Friday, 4 times yesterday when they asked me some specific questions, a couple of which I need to get answers from DFcracka on and get back with them.
this isn't really got a thing to do with anything...just reminiscence
back at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, NC in 2004 (i think) it was advertised as $15 a the door. well, we got there and they only charged us $10. to beat all that, i don't even think 40 people TOTAL were there for the show. ahh, those were the days.
Ziggy's is now closed. sold out to real estate. sad.
Too funny. Shit. I can't even keep up with my own name. You had me thinking I emailed the wrong person! It's all good!! ---------- MofroFan1
