Ya'll ain't gonna believe it. JJ just debuted "I Believe" at the Greater Ozarks Blues Festival in Missouri. This is as hot off the press as it gets. I heard it.
Antsyashley and I exchanged cell numbers earlier today so she could give me details of her excellent adventure to see Mofro in 3 out of 4 days.
She called just a few minutes ago and I hear this loud crowd roar on the phone and she says she can't hear me but thought I might want to hear me some Mofro.
They kick into War. Sounded good. They finish and then, incredibly, JJ starts "I Believe." Everybody's screaming, ants sounds like she's gonna lose her larynx, it's wild. Sounded great even over the cell. Wow. So, that ends the speculation as to where and when it will debut.
He dedicated it to Jerry Reed. Ashley got a chance to talk to JJ for a few minutes last night after the show and he told her that more than anyone Jerry Reed was his idol.
Then they jumped into a funky version of "Higher You Climb" and then I lost the signal.
More later...gotta run and call her back and see if I can catch the encore.
Okay I'm back. Little technical difficulties. NO, not with the band (or JJ's harp mic), more like ants not being able to hear the phone ring, losing connections, and her not being able to hear over the crowd noise. When we hooked back up they were just finishing up first encore--Ho Cake--then the crowd went apeshit, then they came back out for Got My Mojo Workin. The crowd went elephantshit. I could swear there were 2 harps up there but ants said just JJ.
She said it's a neat little local outdoor festival, maybe 300 to 500 people with a bunch of people sitting in lawn chairs in the front row that finally got up to dance at the end. (I'll let her comment, she said it was a little strange.) It's in the parking lot of the BASS store (I'll refrain from snide remarks lest I offend someone from the Show Me state.) She said it was a great show.
She said several people around her said they're heading to see Mofro in Fayetteville tommorow night.

That's correct, y'all! "I Believe" was incredible. I was standing next to these two girls who were embracing each other. And I was so touched by the music that when I looked at them, they could see the mutual feelings and they grabbed my arm and the three of us almost burst into tears right there. Clay, I am so glad you got to be on the phone for that one.
The show was immense. I didn't know what to expect from Springfield. It was great. Like Clay said, there were rows of lawn chairs in front of the stage, all the way across. The people who wanted to stand and boogie were pushed off to the side and behind the first 4 rows of chairs. The whole time, we were all shaking our tailfeathers, all these people who did not know JJ Grey and Mofro were sitting there trying to figure it all out -- from the crazy crowd who adores them to the groovin soul from the guys on stage. Finally the last few songs got those people off their butts and stompin them feet. It was a relief!!
Orange Blossoms was SOOO GOOD! I don't know what they did, but it was blowing up! I just heard it live in Memphis the night before (which was fantastic), but for some reason tonight it had an extra shine. I was in a Mofro frenzy on that one -- fo' sho! Plus -- Mojo Workin was also explosive. Like Clay said, JJ was on double duty with the harp. Oh, and Adam played his fingers off! Dennis and Art showed the crowd what it means to play the horns! And Daryl plucked and strummed like there was no tomorrow! And what a drummer AC is! And his kit is so colorful!
The show was spectacular. I am so glad I got to go. And I can't wait -- I have one more show before I have to go back to reality. Oh, and my friend Liz who is traveling with me is now hooked! She's lovin' it.
Last night I didn't get a wink of sleep cause being so wound up, so tonight I am extra wiped out. Perhaps I will have more to say after I get some rest.
By the way, Clay -- I practically DID lose my larynx! You should hear my voice how hoarse it is. ---------- I believe! I believe! I believe!
