Last night when JJ came back on for the encore and he began this song, I was immediately captivated......I had originally thought that he was performing a new song, I was soon corrected. I had seen the song title before, but never heard it performed until last night.. I was blown away...his lyrics at times for certain songs seem to speak to me and this song was beautiful.

Once again JJ, thank you.

I'm hoping it shows up on the new album. Like he said, it's an oldie but a goodie. You can find it on the archive Sunshine if you want to hear more of Gotta Know. Alot of the older 2004 shows have it, Bamboo Room and the likes.

Anytime Sunshine. With that, if you haven't heard them before either, the original versions of Dew Drops and She Don't Know on the archive are great to check out as well. Especially She Don't Know which originally had a Harp solo in the middle of it. That's what was interesting to me when they were both put on the OB album, how he added harp to Dew Drops and took it away from She Don't Know. I understand considering the style and nature of the song She Don't Know, but any harp is always a nice addition, or the prescription for what ails you I should say.

DT, I heeded your advice an hopped on the archive in search of Gotta Know, Dew Drops, and She Don't Know. I have just come shy of being obsessed with listening to Gotta Know. Such simple, yet powerful lyrics.

Does anyone know the story or meaning behind this song? I am quite curious. Now I am off to downloading multiple versions of this song in seach of "the story".

Happy Friday All!!

Sunshine,

There is a recording on the archive where JJ talks about the meaning of the song. I'm not sure off the top of my head which, but thinking it is the Boom Boom Room 2002 recording where he talks about it. He talks about it being his 'satirical stab and the science community' or something to that effect. Listen to that and you will get the background to the meaning of Gotta Know. Basically, JJ talking about how small we really are in the universe, how little we actually know about anything as humans, and the likes.

While yer at it Sunny, check these out. One of my favorite versions, definitely the best one I have seen in person. I had to split in in 3 parts since youtube has a 10 minute time limit...

Yup, it's one of my favorites as well. Before Orange Blossoms and even Country Ghetto, I was wondering where Dew Drops, She Don't Know, and Gotta Know were or what happened to them since they were never put on an album. Seemed odd considering that JJ's had them in his back pocket for quite some time. They were all three favorites of mine and all I had were a few crappy live recordings of them before the archive took off. Especially Dew Drops, I always felt that song had the making of something special. Then, I remember before OB came out, we were all posting on here as to what all we thought would be on it and I asked Stan I think, whether he thought Dew Drops and She Don't Know had a chance of making it. He didn't think they would because he thought JJ was leaning towards putting all new music on OB, but he didn't rule it out either and said he would love to see them on there as well. Low and behold, they were on OB and I remember listening to them for the first time just giddy with excitement as to what they would sound like when JJ had them the way he wanted. In California, for the two night right I got the pleasure of experiencing in August, I asked JJ after the the LA show whether or not there was any chance of Gotta Know showing up ever again or even on the new album. He just smiled, laughed, and said "maybe, anythings possible." Then he pulls it out on the New Year's Run. As for the album? I wish, just don't know if he feels it has enough to be a full track or what his plans are for the song. It's not a very long song in terms of content (verses/chorus's) but then again, I just always remind myself "Footsteps Coming!"

Man Skot, there you go again pulling out all the stops. I always forget to remind myself about the first Sol Revue content. There's alot of good stuff there, but seems to be almost forgotten ever since the second BSR.

Very good point there DT. It is a shorter song when you consider the lyrics, but whose to say JJ doesn't add another verse or two!?.....or maybe slather a couple of layers of the harp to it......

I was fortunate enough to catch Gotta Know at my first Mofro show in May '02 and always enjoy hearing it live. Unfortunately, it doesn't get played often enough. Now that the new lineup has it down, perhaps it will be in regular rotation....hint, hint if you're reading JJ.

I hear ya Stan, was good to see that the guys have quite a few songs, old and new, down. Added alot to thier arsenal going forward after looking at the Freebird Setlists.

One thing with Gotta Know, JJ has used it to jump start into an Otis Redding Tribute. Would be interesting to see if there was a way he used that in an album or studio recording. I do like your idea Sunshine, throw in a jam session with the prescription for a fever, the harp. Something like the Blackwater medley?

Hey Stan, did you ever get to see Gimme That Drop live or did it elude you as well? The vintage unrefined Lochloosa? Man, would love to have seen those back in the day. That and there are quite a few that they didn't play during Freebird, nor have they played in quite some time. Everybody's, Tragic, Devil You Know, Gal Youngin', Whitehouse, 10,000 Islands, Free, there are just to many to name. So many great songs to work with, so little time!

To continue, Dew Drops, On Palastine, Goodbye, By My Side, That Boy, Santa Claus, Lazy Fo Acre, The Truth, Long Way Home, Pray For Rain, I think that's all. There's only what, 18 songs listed there? That's nearly two albums!

DT....no, I never got to hear Gimme That Drop live. I'm not even sure if the band still played it after saw them for the first time. I did however get to see them do the older Lochloosa version on a few occassions and Down at the Jookhouse, which I don't think has been played very often at all. And I would really enjoy hearing Goodbye at least one more time.
