Made it back home late last night from quite the trip. My first back to back Mofro shows, first time meeting another Mofro-Fanatic off of this site, and my first time of hearing Brighter Days live after seeing the guys nearly 10 times before. I will say, I got alot to post for my review, alot to talk about, alot of people to thank, and well, man oh man, alot just happened over the span of 36 hours.

I've been thinking that I better not attend a three night run at Skipper's or anywhere in Florida or I might have to quit my job to have the time to post my review.

Skam, glad to see you posted the setlist from the LA show, ya beat me too it. I told Adam not to worry about these two nights, that I would take care of them and Kimberly snuck Clay the SD show, then you came in and posted the LA show. Sorry I didn't know you were there, would have been nice to meet ya. I second all your comments on the opening act and the show JJ and the guys put on. They were on both nights and the LA crowd was really into it.

Skam, I saw you said you took some pics but they came out a little blurry. I was right in the front row, directly in front of Daryl and was taking some video of the show. I got just a little bit due to the security lady ordering my girlfriend and I to stop it. Of course she decided to do that about half way through the harp solo of Lochloosa. Sucks, but atleast I have some of it. Funny due to the fact that after the show, my girlfriend and I were talking to Art and he was talking to us about the security lady shutting us down. He was like, I saw her telling you to stop, then he told my girlfriend she should have just turned a punched the lady. He was like, I would have done that, jokingly of course. I will say that Art is just downright hilarious, an all around great guy, as nice as can be, and of course by far the best saxaphone player I have ever seen, known, or could even imagine. He has been so kind and great to my girlfriend and I everytime that I could never thank him enough. The next show I see them, I'm planning on having something special for him to atleast show my gratitude. When I do a complete review, ya'll will understand, but I'm sure if you know him, you don't need any explanation whatsoever.

After that, took a few pics, not a ton, but they turned out great. If you want those pics, let me know and I will email you the file so you have them for the memories as well. I will put them on my Flickr account and post them, but not sure if you can retrieve those files when they are on there. Just let me know.

Well, I have quite a bit more to post, it will come shortly, but I will definitely get it up here. Still trying to come down from the clouds once again after seeing the guys, this time could be quite a while before I see the ground..

These next two are my favorites of the pictures I took.

The first one, caught it when the light created a halo over Art as he is obviously getting down and dirtly. As you can see by the pics, I'm right in front of Daryl practically on the stage.

This one is the other favorite. I would have to label it "The Sun Is Shining Down" Looks like the Sun is actually Shining Down on JJ as the stage light rays jump into the picture. This was taken during the second encore which was Junior. JJ had just gone around the horn and is finishing up. He went down to the floor on his back playing, something I have never seen him do, but know he has been known to do it on occasion. He is just coming back up when the pic is taken. When I saw he went down, scrambled for the camera and was only able to get this pic. No complaints though, this one turned out great. Enjoy.

Looks like you had yourself some sweet real estate up there, DT.

We have a 3-day FL run coming up...I'm working on getting ahead on some sleep already, but somehow I don't think it works that way! Sue Webb and I are also kicking around the idea of pulling a 4th night in Birmingham if any of ya'll FLA folks are feelin' froggy.

Nice shots, thanks for sharing.

I have a ton of video from the SD show, it all turned out great. Sound and all, a little dark at times and bouncy from me holding the camera, but still great. The El Rey video turned out great as well, just not that much of it. Didn't think it would being that I was right up front and felt the speakers would make the sound horrible, but my little camera amazes me to no end.

A few things of note,

I love the WYLF jam session where Art and Dennis come out in front with JJ and jam while all dancing together.

Anthony on the keys is ridiculous. He is amazing on those things. I play the keys as well and at the SD show was in a spot where I could see him stroking the ivory and couldn't stop shaking my head.

Talking about keys, the whole discussion about JJ being on keys to me is something of the past. JJ standing and playing the whole show makes it a better show I think. He dances and gets down the whole time, really gets into the songs, has the ability to go crazy on the harp and guitar, just seems like the show has really taken on a new vibe that can't be matched by anything.

JJ on the guitar is ridiculous too. I was watching him play up close at LA and he is unreal on the axe. The solos and licks he plays are crazy. He really has got it going in every sense of the word.

Overall, this group together really has a quite the chemistry together and talent beyond anything else out there right now. Both the shows were flat out amazing and just keeping getting better and better. It's a can't miss no doubt.

Hey DT, that's awesome! Great photos. Can't wait to see more. And great comments on the shows. I'm getting excited that Voodoo Fest is only 2 months away now. So glad you had a marvelous time and got to hear Brighter Days twice! I guess it kinda makes up for them skipping Phoenix for now....

Shazzam! DT if anybody deserved 2 nites like that it's you. I'm downright tickled for you.

Let's see...where do I start? How about here: what's that about Art and Dennis coming forward and dancing with JJ? Whoa! I've been to 13 shows in the past 9 months, most recent as a month ago, and ain't seen that. Must be something new to look forward to!

Ain't Art great? If y'all aint gone up and talked to Art before, do it next time. You don't have to worry about what you're gonna say. Art just jumps right in and within a minute or so will have you in stitches. He is most certainly the "class clown" of the bunch. And while I'm sure there are others, as far as I'm concerned he's the perfect sax man for this band.

I agree...while Scone is missed, we're not lacking for a thing in the keyboard department. Anthony kicks ass.

JJ's still wearing sneakers. I think the boots are history for sure.

Now you know what I mean about JJ's stage presence DT. One of the things I failed to mention in my other post is that when I talked to JJ about the keys he said that, in addition to the physical space the keyboard was taking up, he felt like it also broke up the rythym of the act as he changed from one instrument to the other. He feels they can keep their groove on better without it.

Yeah it is amazing how JJ has come along on guitar in even just the last 3-4 years. He has gotten very comfortable with a style that's his.

Lastly, DT...how are they going to pull you off the ceiling at work this week? Cause I know you're still gonna be walking on air.

Yup Clay, the WYLF jam session for both shows, JJ motioned to Art and Dennis and they start high stepping to the front with JJ, right next to Daryl and flat out jam and dance it up. JJ's on the guitar going back and forth and of course Art and Dennis are dancing blowing tunes like crazy. I got it on video from the SD show, so I have proof! My girlfriend went to the bathroom when they did it in SD and I was like "you missed it!" when she came back, but when they played it at the LA show, she got to see it. About the only thing that could top it right now would be if they got Daryl up and dancing as well, but we all know the chances of that are about as likely as seeing AC not smiling.

Also, I don't think JJ was wearing sneakers during the SD show, they weren't boots either though. They looked like the kind of shoes that Daryl wears but not sure. Didn't get to good a look at them for that show.

Well, it seems I've stirred up quite a bit of interest in the WYLF Jam with Art and Dennis coming up to the front and dancing with JJ as they jam, so I figured I better get the video up right away. Sounds like this is a new thing for the guys as no one on here has come forward saying that they have seen it happen as of yet. The video is a little dark from it being at the Belly Up. You can still see exactly what is going on, with maybe the exception of Dennis. He was wearing a black shirt of course and is in the back of the three from where I took the video. I was worried with the lighting for the Belly Up, because it is quite dark in there, but still turned out better than I thought it would. The sound came out great.

As for the video, it starts with the guys out front and jamming. A few things that I noticed or would like to point out, Arts jam near the end where he starts playing with one hand and back and forth. Looking at JJ's expression throughout, alot of shaking his head and smiling. Finally, Art's final move and dip before going back to thier normal spots on the stage. Enjoy

DT, thanks for the pics. A few thoughts on the show now that I've had time to recover...

-I love that you remembered Dennis and Art coming up front, DT. That was one of my favorite moments as well, but i just couldn't remember what song it was. For your memory, I am eternally grateful.

-JJ's leather engraved guitar strap - sharp!

-Lochloosa and Brighter Days were truly amazing moments for me. Imagine you're pen pals with a woman you've never seen, then when you meet her in person you find it's Angelina Jolie (or any really hot person, insert your own here:_________). That's what it was; i've heard those songs so many times, to see them do it live was mindblowing.

- The jamming was top notch, but I have to say this (will probably make some enemies but i gotta be honest): I've always felt the only thing missing from MOFRO was a truly great guitarist. JJ's definitely improved, but his solos havent changed much and I'm used to hearing the Black Crowes, AC/DC, Phish, Joe Satriani, guitarists that can really jam/shred. Keep in mind this is no knock on the band, they're one of my top 5 live acts ever. And honestly, having a guitarist do a 5 minute solo might actually take away from what MOFRO does as a whole. had to get it off my chest.

-Lastly, the Junior to close it was amazing, but my favorite song of the night just might have been the Sun Is Shining Down. There is so much passion in that song, it is truly brutal on the senses (in a good way).

-My only disappointment.. no Harp & Drums. Not that they play it a whole lot, but it's my favorite MOFRO song ever, and much like DT and Brighter Days, seeing that song has now ben added to my bucket list. Next time they're out this way can you put in a word to the band for me Clay?

-I bought one of the yellow Country Ghetto tshirts, always wanted one but never took the time to buy it online. i was wearing it today, showing off my MOFRO pride, when i looked into the mirror and noticed something on the snake. it reflects to say "Don't Tread On Me?" Are you kidding me?! How frickin cool is that?! Never noticed it before (this is probably common knowledge to most of you Mofronians but i never saw it).

-Still working on getting my pics into Flickr, though I will definitely be slowed down as school is starting this week (I'm a teacher, and when the school year starts life pretty much stops). So when they're up I'll try to post them, or at least let everyone know. I was in the front row, all the way on the right, just in front of Anthony. DT, looks like you were on the other side. I was the idiot with the black hat up on the step dancing like a fool in case you noticed.

Now comes the hard part -realizing that the boys may not be around here again for a couple years. I shall be patient, i shall be patient...

I don't know there Skam, I have a pretty good feeling she will have you beat with regards to the Crowes. She was telling me at the SD show about her expeditions to see the Crowes. If I recall right, she did some extensive traveling in Europe to see them and I can't imagine she doesn't do the same here in the states.

As for the guys coming back to CA, I think they will be back sooner than you think. In fact, I think they will be back in the SD area in October, more specifically just east of SD at a BBQ fest in Viejas. Other than that, they make it out to California quite a bit. Atleast once or twice a year and if what they told me after the LA show, they will be in my area (AZ-Phoenix) in December, that bodes well for So Cal as they usually make it a trip right up the west coast whenever they play AZ.

Hey Sunshine,

The name is actually the name of a dog, a greyhound racing dog to be exact.

I was born and raised in Western Kansas where a couple of buddies and I worked off and on for a famous breeder/kennel owner with regards to Greyhound racing. Ever since then I was always interested in the names they came up for each dog. After going to college out in Arizona where I am now and starting to work where I work today, I became friends with a co-worker who followed Greyhounds racing up at Phoenix Greyhound Park. I started to follow them again for quite a while, that is until I ran short on time and spend my free time listening to Mofro! One of the dogs I followed quite extensively was a pup called Delerious Tyme. Always liked the name and the dog. The dog has since been retired and was kept by the original owner. (most retired greyhounds go up for adoption) As you can imagine, I kept an eye out for DT to be available for adoption, but it never came. Anyways, long story short, that is where I came up with the name.

Anytime Sunshine, anytime...

Kimberely - As always, I would love to make it out there for anything having to do with Mofro, but not sure whether I will make it for that. It is listed for a saturday, October 17th, free show. Looks as though it will be a short set, the event will have two stages going at once, something like 8-10 bands total for the day. I'll see what I can do about being there when the date gets closer. This last trip I was planning on making but was not for sure until about the day I left that I was going. Booked the hotel right before leaving and just winged everything else. The only plan going out there was to be at the shows, the rest was just siteseeing on a whim. Wherever the road took us, but not hard to do in SoCal, Pacific Beach, Hollywood, Venice, Cedros Ave, all beautiful places and have so much to see and do. Throw in Mofro and it's a trip to remember for sure...

It'd be hard to make enemies around here Skam! I'm sure there are some that agree with you. If you haven't heard any of the shows on the archive with Matt Grondin sitting in then go right now, do not pass Go, do not collect $200 and download them. Matt's addition is exactly (I think) what you're talking about. You can find Matt on pretty much all the New Year's shows at the Freebird (his family owns the Freebird), at both Blackwater Sol Revue shows, Wannee '08, Skipper's Jan 09, and many others.

He doesn't sit in the whole shows. Usually the last couple plus the encores. Matt is incredible.

Matt's style complements Daryl's (and JJ's.) Daryl is very conservative, lays back and waits for the right moments to come in. He doesn't drive the music, it drives him. When you see Daryl looking at JJ his mind is wrapping around JJ's groove and tempo and where he's going, so he can plot his next move. Daryl is a meticulous player. I love watching (and listening) to Daryl. You'll definitely dig the shows with Matt on them.

Oh...and the Don't Tread On Me logo on that shirt...that is cool ain't it. JJ designed that.

And as for Harp and Drums...well, for anyone new to the board that don't know it already, CLAY LOVES HIM SOME HARP AND DRUMS. We are relentless with JJ when we go see them cause JohnDude and Liz love it too. He has to do it just so we'll shut up. I dunno if that works if I'm not there, but I'll see what I can do for you for sure!

Yup Clay, and she decided to tell us at the worst time also. About two-thirds of the way through the Lochloosa harp solo, my girlfriend nudged me to say that the lady had told her to stop recording. I was so into the concert that I didn't hear her say it to my girlfriend, but a few other people at the show and I talked about it during the two encore breaks.

The security at El Rey was pretty poor in my opinion. Not just the telling us to stop the video, considering Art noticed it as well and told my girlfriend if he was her, he would have punched the security lady, so obviously it wasn't a problem to the guys that we were taping.

Before the show, we were chatting with the lady while waiting for it to start. She asked what kind of music the guys were and seemed very nice and friendly. She was guarding the backstage door on our side of the stage and didn't let AC in because he didn't have his pass on him. He was out getting food and she denied him, so he went to the other side of the stage and got in. Was gonna joke with him about syrup then, but he didn't seem to be in the joking mood when she denied him. Was ok since I got to joke with him about the syrup after the show.

Then she was the same to alot of Anthony's friends going backstage as well. It was Anthony's homecoming show, so he had couple of tables reserved on our side of the theatre as well and they were going in and out of backstage. She denied a few a couple of time or made them wait outside the doors until Anthony came out and took them back. You could tell he was a little irritated.

Last thing was the craziness that happened at the end of the first set and the first encore break. Right before the last song, I noticed a kid standing right behind me that was not there the entire show. He wasn't dancing or anything, just arms crossed and staring at JJ. JJ said thanks for coming out and threw his pick at the crowd, but obviously they were coming out for an encore or two. That I could see from looking at the set list at JJ's feet. Knew exactly what they were playing being right there and could read the setlist. Right after they left the stage, the kid pushed the couple to the right of me, jumped on stage, grabbed JJ's setlist and back off the stage. I yelled at him, "What are you doing? They are coming back out man, put that back!" A guy behind me who I was talking to before the concert, pretty cool guy and big too, stepped in front of the kid as he tried to leave. He was yelling at him as well and held him up for quite a while. I looked at the security and the lady didn't notice anything, didn't do anything, just stood there. The kid finally got away and took off. Right after he did that, a girl on the other side of the stage did the same thing and grabbed the setlist off of AC's drums. AC was pretty confused when they came back and had to ask Art what they were playing.

Finally, after the show, security was just the same telling everyone to move on out of the theatre as fast as possible. We were waiting to talk to JJ and the guys, but they whisked everyone as fast as they could. Didn't even let alot of people check out the merchandise stand for very long.

That was the only dissappointing part of the show, but of course it had nothing to do with JJ Grey & Mofro whatsoever. Of course, they were great, both for the show and hanging out afterwards.

thats pretty crazy behaviour there DT.
I always wait until the band is def. done before considering taking a setlist from any band, jumping on stage right before an encore is not nice.

as for folks coming and going from backstage, if they had the right credentials , yeah it's BS for a security to hassle but if they didn't I can understand, otherwise everyone and their mother would be back there. if security doesn't make sure ,they can get in big trouble. but if AC told her who was ok , than maybe they should someone else there that could handle that job better.
I have seen lots of nastiness from venues when it comes to clean the place out after a show. they don't give a fuck, they made their money, got everybody drunk on expensive shit and now get the F.. out ( I've heard that several times)

the city with the most cool venues that don't have all these issues, in my opinion , is new orleans
they don't give a shit about lots of shit

i'm sick of this coorperate shit that is geting mixed into the music scene nowadays...don't get me started

Clay - i have actually downloaded a couple shows with Matt joining in, and yeah, he's spectacular. In fact, if it weren't for those shows and one where Luther Dickinson sat in on Lochloosa I would've never noticed the guitar thing. I heard those and I was like, wait a minute, a guitar solo? Holy crap!

And DT - I've been to about 5 or 6 venues in LA and the security always sucks, they're total music nazis. Sometimes even the fans are almost as bad. Went to an Allmans show at the Wiltern Theater 6 or 7 years ago and my friend and I were in the balcony. We were up and dancing, having a good old time when some jackass behind us whips an empty beer cup at my head. I turned around, smiled, and kept on dancing. The crowds are usually half and half - half are actually there to listen to good music, the other half is there to look pretty and be seen. in that regard, the MOFRO show was a little above par. i don't remember seeing the kid jump up but i do remember that girl grabbing the set list off of AC's drums - i remember thinking "wow, she's got balls"...

Yeah, the guy didn't get on he feet on stage when he jumped up there. He kinda jumped up and sat at the end of the stage, barrel rolled to where the set list was at, near the base of the microphone stand, grabbed it and jumped off. That girl that jumped on stage saw him do that and then decided to go and grab Anthony's. I was thinking the same thing after she jumped up there.

Don't get me wrong though, while the show at LA was a little bit crazier than SD and had those things go on, by no means did it ruin anything that the show produced. The rest of the crowd was great, they really set the tone with JJ from the start. The place was packed and the guys were really into it.

Hey Skam, did you notice the two tapers in the back? I'm waiting on them to post the show here one of these days. That theatre had a nice set up for them to tape. I have a feeling the recordings came out great if they didn't have any problems. Will be nice to have that show to re-live with a recording.

Didn't see the tapers, but I've been checking the archive and haven't seen anything yet. Most recent show up was from July 25th i think. If they put it up on etree im screwed, haven't figured out the bittorrent thing yet.
