Hey Tapers,

Please help. I'm looking into getting some stealth equipment to do some live audio recording. I just started doing a little research, and WOW do I have a lot to learn!

I was wondering if y'all have any favorite websites for tapers? I'd love to find a good message board/forum where people have discussions about equipment, quality, software, etc. Also, what are some good sites to purchase mics and recorders and all that jazz? Frank mentioned soundprofessionals.com, and I have found it to be quite useful. Anyone know where to get other new/used equipment? What about any sites with some how-to guides and such?

Thanks a lot. This is just the beginning. :-) ~Ash

Ash,
www.taperssection.com

EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING you need to know.
Take your time & read the FAQ (frequently asked questions)
There is a "Yard Sale" where tapers are selling their used gear, quality stuff for less than full price! That's where I got my mics. People on the site are really friendly and don't mind helping newbies.

You got my #, call if you want to.

I'll third the taperssection.com notion, pretty much the tapers BIBLE. Start at the top "where to begin" and go from there...

And congrats on getting into the game Ash, we need more female tapers! I think you'll be great at this...

These days you can find pretty much all you need equipment wise for GREAT prices in the Yard Sale. This economy has sent the market on gear WAY down. Along with John Dude, you know I'll be happy to lend any help you need, skot_dee@hotmail.com

Thanks Scott. Don't congratulate me just yet! Wait til I tape my first show! I'd love to acquire a little gear before the 1/29 Baton Rouge show (if I make it), but that seems to be nearing so quickly!

My good friend Nik will be the sound/light man at the BR show, so I wonder if that will have any effect on my access/capabilities.

antsy, since I've been to shows with you, I feel like I have enough authority on this matter to say...maybe there's a taper (ahem) that can give you tips on how to not get shitfaced while you're taping. (I can't help myself.)

Kimberly--congrats to you, you've reached 100 posts, but you have a long way to go to reach ashley's. Keep at it!

Hahahaha -- y'all are hilarious. Yeah Clay, I have seen first-hand what NOT to do when taping. Ribbit...ribbit.

Y'all, please have low expectations for my first tape job. I am gonna (maybe) get some VERY basic equipment without any enhancements. I just hope I have time to try it out on a local bar show before I get to a Mofro show, so I can figure out what I am doing. And I just hope things go better than expected!

If I had a dollar for every KILLER recording I fucked up...I'd be rich! Seriously, you don't even wanna know how many amazing performances went untaped because of "user error".

The only way to tape a show is to, tape a show! Expect to fucup abit, try new things, if everybody is facing East, set your shit up facing West. My very first MOFRO recording using microphones I had lost my windscreens(nerf condoms), and the wind was picking up. I put a pair of socks on the mics & got a great recording. My rig looked totaly ghetto, but who cares!

Just don't get so serious about taping that you forget to have fun.

Y'all are making me feel a little more at ease. Thanks.

So, I have this thread going at the taperssection message board. I already heard from Mr. Jello, but I'd like to get an opinion from the rest of you tapers. Or would it be better to talk on the phone, John Dude?

Ash...go with the R-09, as I've seen several folks using it as an "ALL IN ONE" at Bear Creek. I haven't heard a recording, but have seen many folks using it.
Send me your address, I will let you borrow a set of stealth mics & battery box...so you can try recording
R-09 vs. mics>batt box>R-09

Check the yard sale.

Well, well, folks. I just purchased the BRAND NEW Tascam DR-07. It is being released tomorrow, will arrive at the vendor by Friday, and will ship to me by Tuesday next week. Just in time to try it out in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

For anyone interested, this device is tiny and will fit in a bra! The special deal comes with free external mics ($69 value) and sells for $200. And I think the quality is going to be quite acceptable (if I can figure out what I'm doing).

And John Dude is sending/loaning me some cool stuff to possibly use with it. Thanks, man! This is all so exciting.
