What a perfect night! I'm talkin' bout shirt sleeves, short pants, sandals, under the stars and oaks listening to ain't nothing better in the world JJ Grey & Mofro.
As you can see by the setlist, it was 2 1/2 hours of pure swamp funk and soul. Once again, no piano for JJ. Now...I don't want to go all Morley Safer on Danny or nothing but what he gave as a reason don't seem to come out right. There were no sit-ins last night. Did anybody talk to Danny about it and I missed it? Do please tell!
JJ's kicking ass on the guitar. Man, even from what he was doing a couple years ago, he's kicking ass on it. He's got a lot more comfort level for sure, and hitting licks he never has.
Lots of home town folks showing their love for A.C. His lovely and talented mother, Miss Linda Cole (also known as one of the backup singers on "Orange Blossoms" was in the audience with us for a few songs. She was singing, she was dancing, she was having a good time! She is a very warm and loving person y'all. You feel it from the moment you meet her. (And a damn lot of it rubbed off on her son too.)
WHOA--DARYL TROUSER ALERT! Dig it y'all. For the second show in a row, Daryl did NOT have on orange/rust cords. Cords, yes. Orange, no. These were a light grey. His record for the number of shows in orange is now busted. He was hanging by the bus door an hour after the show ended where some anxious fans had coaxed him to come out and sign some shit. I was gonna ask him about the whole trouser thing but as I got in close I noticed that he was real...hmmmm...uhhh...kinda...overserved. Yeah, that's it, overserved. So I thought it best to keep my smart ass ribbing to myself and let him continue having fun doing what he was...uh...doing.
Is it me, or is JJ's voice at 90-95%? I'm gonna keep asking until somebody either says no it's not just you, or tells me to stick it in my ear (or get the shit out of it.)
I can't get Ho Cake outta my head right now. Especially the horns part. I think I videotaped HoCake last night. Shit, I know I video'd 2 songs. Oh, Harp and Drums was one and Stagger Lee was the other. It's coming back to me now.
Good news: with a lot of coaxing from certain members of the audience--both nights--as well as a personal plea from one trophy wife, they did Stagger Lee. Bad news: it was a somewhat cleaner version. Good news: it's all good. (Skipper's is an all age club.)
I was at the show at the Freebird a year ago when they first added Hoochie Coochie Man to the encore list. Shit, it's even better now, if that's possible. It's a great platform for each member's talents to show-thru.
Of course everybody went nuts for Ybor City. JJ's vocals were strong--but it's in the hard driving spots in the chorus of songs like this that I'm hearing a little held back on his voice (I know, I know...clean the shit out.) Also one of those songs where you can see how JJ's guitar talents have evolved in the recent few years.
Nice to hear Dewdrops (was hoping he'd pull out the acoustic but he didn't). Best song from early CDs: The Wrong Side. Song they played that made a lot of people happy (right Frank?): Footsteps>Turpentine. Song that Daryl blew me away on: Footsteps>Turpentine. Song that Art and Dennis got the most funky to: Footsteps>Turpentine; close second: Mississippi; close 3rd Ho Cake. (One of these days Art's gonna hurt hisself!) Songs that AC seemed to be enjoying playing the most: all of them. Number of arms/hands Adam has 3.
I've got lot of pics to cull thru and get posted in the next few days. Video too. Stay tuned.
hell ya clay...that Blackwater > Ybor City > Dew Drops > Footsteps > Turpentine run was orgasmic. I fucking loved it..and I'm sorry for almost tearing your shoulder off during that run. I had a blast. Last nights show was my fav JJ Grey & Mofro in the 2 years i've been taping/following the band. I can't wait to put my tape up b/c I want to hear it again.

My highlights for besides the Blackwater > Ybor City > Dew Drops > Footsteps > Turpentine run was Ho Cake, Mississippi and of course Ybor City. The band was on fire...and I know next time I'm wearing my Miami Vice shirt. Good things happen with that shirt.
I had a blast dancing and playing air guitar/trumpet/harp and drums with you guys up front. Whenever I tape and I know my rig is secure I'll be up there with you guys getting it on.
I swear Daryl looks like my friend Jake (and I'm glad to say that Emily's yak is all cleaned up) and I'm in process of upping the show on bt.etree.org
I will try my best to do Gainesville > Orlando > Tallahassee run...its on my birthday week and if anyone wants to ride along with me and Jake we can road trip it up. Holla!

you called me nye during H&D which i could decipher in the cell phone world. last night's call sounded different. and yes, you called twice but i got a vm from call #1 and nothing #2. i was in the middle of my twilight but i don't mind Mofro calls. lol

Look for AKG480 sources to come too! ---------- "throwin' pennies on the tracks and playin' in the rain...oblivious of the world around us that was going insane"
Damn, I can't figure out which thread to post in, there are too many about this run! I settled on this one since it was the last show. HOLY SHIT what an amazing time, I am so glad I got to get DOWN with all of you! (of course on Tues I took "getting down" a little too literal) Finally caught up on my sleep and my first day back to works so I can finally post something.
SO glad to meet so many of you, Ashley, Jeff, Kimberly, Joe (ya'll know you love my defensive driving), Frank, Eric & "your girl" (sorry I forgot her name), Misty, Adam (merch guy) & anybody Im forgetting... as well as all of you I already know, thats you guys CLAY, Jen, Ute, Danny, etc...
Special thanks again to my rescue crew John Dude, Liz & Beau, and BIG thanks for putting me up in O-Town Saturday Night. EXCELLENT accomodations @ "casa de dude" ya'll, complete with complimentary chicory coffe in the a.m. Just make sure you take the right exit or you're in for the "scenic route" or as I remember the "raccoon tour"... sorry ya had to be there.
Again, wow what a run, HUGE thanks to Clay for starting this site, (happy anniversary by the way) and creating such an amazing community of fans and of course Mofro for igniting the spark behind it all. Its so damn cool when we actually get together and throw down like that. I just can't say enough. Like JD already said, THANKS.
Big thanks to Frank for the instant gratification uploads of the skippers shows, and as JD already mentioned we've got our sources to share as well, including a couple "enhanced" AKG 480 recordings. Look for the all 4 days to be up on archive this weekend. I apologize for the delay but I leave tomorrow for a little college football game this Thursday in Miami. Speaking of that listen up in Mississippi from night two of Skips for some bowl game trash talk from JJ. Classic.
Anyway, damn, can I write any more here? About the shows, SMOKIN as always. LOVED Santa Claus in Jacksonville, as well as Stagger Lee in Tampa. Still wanna see Caught the Devil again. Stoked to get my ass like an army mule story at skippers and definitely miss JJ on keys, hope thats a temporary thing, but its all good cause good GOD I loves me some Mofro and I'd walk 10 miles backwards on my hands uphill through the snow just to hear them play mary had a little lamb on a clock radio through a tin can telephone.
God bless every damn last one of ya'll and I can't wait to do the whole thing over again. (well, except for the trash can. You can keep that)
Wow skotdee, that is quite a testimonial! Everyone has written such amazing prose about their Florida experiences. I am so glad you all have shared your charmed moments with the board, your imagery and excitement are captivating & make the reader feel as if they were right there with you:)

Seeing these pictures brings it all back. MOFRO Fans are the best!!! We are definatley a family ---------- "throwin' pennies on the tracks and playin' in the rain...oblivious of the world around us that was going insane"
thank you for the BT...this was one of the best mofro sets that I've seen in the past 3 years...the Blackwater, Air, Wrong Side,...what a treat... i stood back in the corner for this one as I was beat from Galactic the night before...I honestly wasn't excited about going to this show having just seen them at Bear Creek and 3 other times this year and having witnessed the funk that is known as Galactic just hours prior(it's difficult to find a better live band than Galactic), I didn't even buy a ticket...my friend's wife backed out at the last minute so he asked me to go, so I couldn't turn it down...what a great moment of happenstance, what a great freakin show...
finally had some time to look at the pictures, there awesome! guess you're keepin the one where I'm grindin on your trophywife for your own personal showermaterial, clay, hehe what kind of camera is your new one ? I like those shots where stuff is 'swhooshy'lookin I got a few photos, also I took 388 on jamcruise, I'm goin to try to sort all that out soon, I'll post some ---------- "..they outta outlaw airconditionin' in clubs, let mothafuckas sweat aaaall night looong .."
