Hey board,

First off, I am kicking myself for not driving down to Hot 'Lanta for the show at the Variety. Nothing like an awesome review to rub a little salt in the wound. I will still catch the boys in Nashville in November. That will be 4 shows for me in '08.

Now, I wanted to ask all my fellow Mofro fans a question. What would be your idea of a perfect 3 song encore? Don't get me wrong, I have never been disappointed with a single encore....ever. I don't think that is even humanly possible. Let's take it one step further. Assuming the boys have already played Lochloosa, what would you want them to end the first set with? I will start this thing off.

Florida
**Encore**
Stagger Lee
Junior
I believe - still haven't heard it live.

good thread

Brighter Days
----------------
Sun is Shining Down
Jookhouse
Harps & Drums

i think solely for the emotion JJ puts into, and shows, in SISD would provoke an ungodly Jook and Harps...

Damn, Brighter Days. That was the first song I heard them play live and I haven't heard it since. Now I am trying to substitue. To hell with it, UHollis broke the rules, so will I. Put it at the beginning of my encore.

That's a tough question but I would have to go with this to end it.

Junior
---------------
Dew Drops
I Believe
Brighter Days

If they came back for a second encore, would have to go like this

Junior
---------------
Dew Drops
I Believe
Everybody's
---------------
Brighter Days

I've only heard I Believe and Junior Live out of all of those. Can't wait to hear Brighter Days live. Still waiting after 6 concerts. They haven't pulled out Everybody's in ages, but that would be for my girlfriend, that's her favorite.

There's my 2 cents..

And one song I am really interested in and that they have only played once that I know of, which was in Oregon, is Goodbye.

But then again, there are alot of them that they don't play hardly at all that I think are great songs along with Goodbye, hence, Pray for Rain, Wrong Side, Long Way Home, On Palastine, Tragic, Free, Whitehouse, Everybody's and Gal Youngin'. I've only heard one of those in 6 concerts. Kudos to anyone who would know which one.

the perfect encore in my opinion is a different one every show. if you make the same song part of the encore, people are going to expect it every time.
I guess I don't have any expectations or thoughts, just GIVE IT TO ME ! how ever and in any order!

I was going to add my 2 cents, but then I realized that dirtcracker got it perfect with the harp'n'drums closer. although i might've thrown in a footsteps->turpentine as well...

Whoa, TN_Cracka...good one! This is really hard. I have to think more on it. I can say for sure that Harp and Drums is on the list. That is such a killer jam--you KNOW what I'm talkin about. Well, at least dirtcracker does for sure, and SKAM. I'd have to give strong consideration to Gotta Know. Man, it's hard to top Junior as an encore. Did I mention Harp and Drums. Man do I love that as an encore (I'm just pluggin it again by the way-off chance that JJ reads this and puts it back in rotation.) Oh, and I like the Gal Youngin' suggestion. That's good too. But it's hard to argue with all yours dirtcracker. Damn. I'm so confused. I can't pick any! My brain hurts.

DT, I'm gonna go with Wrong Side as a guess.

yeah, me and the group of friends i travel with every summer for DMB we usually play a setlist game before each show we go to. $5 entry and winner gets the pot. so i'm used to picking stuff like this. of course with DMB it got pretty predictable. one of the MAIN differeneces i like Mofro - their ability to mix it up every night.

i've yet to hear Junior now that i think about it. at least i don't remember it. they may have played it first time i saw them open for Ben Harper and i didn't know ANY of their songs.

Footsteps > Turpentine
Harp & Drums

Awesome thread!!

If you asked me this tomorrow my answer would probably change, but for today:

1) Stagger Lee - Cuz yes I finally know all the words too Kimberly and I wanna sing it!
2) Jamaican Jookhouse / Nare Sugar - I hope to hear JJ go Jamaican at least once!
3) Harp and Drums

These 3 songs would ensure that I had to get carried out of the joint at the end of the night due to complete exhaustion hahahaha

Yes, it is hard! Tupelo Honey would be beautiful. I, too, am dying to hear it. I want to hear Santa Claus because I find it surprisingly sweet. Also never heard my favorite -- Brighter Days -- another fan favorite. I want to hear Florida with hard core jam session because of the last show I saw in Fayetteville. Their Florida jam was unbelievable and I don't think I was quite prepared. I must have that again. And Mississippi is a fun fun state to see these dudes! JJ Grey recognizes some special funk when he plays Jackson! Who wants to meet me there?!?!

UHollis,

I didn't know that he played it at the Bamboo Room, but when they run those three day shows, can't beat em because they get through alot of songs. I know they did play it in Oregon back in 07. There is a recording of it on the archive.

It was played at WOW Hall in Eugene, 11/7/2007. Kinda a different recording cuz you can tell the crowd has no clue as to what song he is singing.

Excellent Topic!!!

I vote for:

Caught the Devil

Whitehouse

Harps & Drums

Anybody got a copy of the show from NOLA 2005, at the Maple Leaf(during Jazzfest)? I taped it...and can't find my copy(so dang disorganized) JJ is running a 102 fever & busts into "You Down With O.P.P.!?" It's hillarious.

Delerious Tyme....I knew I had a live version of Goodbye lying around here somewhere and found it tonight: 12/3/2004, The Abbey Pub, Chicago, Il.....I think this may have been the first time it was played live, if not, then one of the first. I will upload it to the live music archive in the next couple days. ENJOY!

Swkelley, I am listening to the encores from this 2004 Chicago show. Wow! Gotta Know is beautiful. Is that Adam playing all the keys, or is JJ playing some too? And is that Daryl or JJ or both on the guitar? [I know JJ is not playing the keys and the guitar at the same time]. What a great improv tribute to Otis Redding at the end!

JJ (and the others, of course) just reaches into your soul and gives your heart a massage! Damn, my knees are weak!

SWKelley,

As always, much thanks on the Abbey Pub upload. That is a great version of Goodbye. The only other one that I knew of was in Oregon. The Abbey Pub one is a much better recording. Very Nice. It sounds like the first time they played it, but could be wrong. Danny O. would know. It is dated well before they issued CG on disc, so pretty likely it is. As with every recording, thanks to the taper and the uploader, that being SWKelley. Oh, and thank you once again for the Rhythm Room. Just waiting for thier return...

I'm resurrecting an old thread here cause it was a good one.

The guys have been playing some of these lately as encores...Stagger Lee, Harp & Drums, Brighter Days, 6 Ways, Jookhouse, Sun is Shining, and Mojo has been getting a lot of action. Your old post there dirt(y) cracker about the betting on setlist--that's pretty cool. If you had to pick the 3 encore songs--in order--that they're gonna play at a show I gotta think the odds are pretty tough.

Based on some LMA stuff I've been listening to lately, I'm rescinding my previous selection and offering up new picks.

Gotta Know
Brighter Days
Harp & Drums
